In anticipation of the move, I realized that the old TV wasnt going to work
for the new smaller living room. I figured I'd get something to put on the
wall and found this in my travels :

http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/pr...tId=prod901238

Even the SD stuff that SageTV is recording looks awesome, the HD recordings
are amazing, but the blu ray stuff is almost 3d! I had to test it with
Avatar and ended up watching half the movie again I wasnt too thrilled
after hearing about Glennbo's (and others on the web) experience with
Vizio's tv's, but Sams has a great extended warrantee so if it pukes like
those, at least I'll be covered.

Nice find! And 40 member reviews all give it 5 diamonds... can't be too
awful bad, can it? Either that or the warranty replacement service is
spectacular :-)

Well, I can see why they all gave it 5 diamonds! We just watched a few
hours on it and I cant say how much was enjoying the shows and movie or how
much was just sitting in wonderment I really hope that I dont have to use
the warranty!

Pretty cool! Hopefully Vizio has gotten it together with the electronics
that drive the screen. That's what blew on mine, and a bunch of other
people's sets that were all manufactured around the same time.

So what's the deal with LED TVs? Are they just using LEDs in place of
the flourescent backlight, and if so does that mean you could potentially
have one single LED go out, causing it to look like a dead pixel?

Yeah, I took your problem to heart when I heard it and became leary of Vizio
after your experience. If Sam's didnt offer such a good warranty I never
would havce got it. I got the 1 year from Vizio, 3 year from Sam's, and
since I'm a plus member they gave me another year. I figure if I get 5
years out of it before anything goes wrong I'll be happy.

Yeah, that's basically it. As for the question of a dead pixel, couldnt
answer that. At least if it happens within the next 5 years I'm covered
I normally rip my blu-ray's to the WHS and play them through the SageTV
hd-200, but I'm getting alot of stuttering. I'm sure it's something I'm
doing but with the move <hopefully> happening next month, so my main focus
is getting this place organized so that I can get the stuff moved, then this
place in shape to sell over the winter. Going from over 2k sq feet to 1k
after 20 years of "collecting", there is alot of picking and choosing! I
figured I'd just get a blu-ray player to hook up to it until after I get
settled and have time to play with it, so I went to best buy to check them
out. I got sidetracked while watching the LCD-LED's side by side to the
regular LCD's, was like night and day. I guess it helps that I'm going
from a rear projection TV that maxed out at 59hz to a 240hz LED

So if you have a BluRay drive in the computer, can you not just share it on
the network, and then access it directly with something that knows how to
play a BluRay, like PowerDVD? Also, isn't the only difference between 1080
broadcast HDTV and BluRay the fact that broadcast 1080 is interlaced, and
BluRay is progressive? I mean, the actual resolution is identical, but one
draws the odd lines then the even lines, where the other draws the lines in
sequential order. I would suspect that if your set has a fast refresh
rate, then you wouldn't be able to tell much if any difference, but on
slower refresh rates it would be more noticable.

Good catch Glennbo! I was thinking that exact same thing last night after
sending the email. SageTV may allow me to just add the drive as one of it's
shared media folders. I boxed up all of the blu-ray's already, so I was
thinking about going and renting one this weekend to see if it works. I can
play the blu-ray's right inside of SageTV so I wont have to use PowerDVD.
If I have it ripped to the server, it shows up in the Video's section so you
just push play.

I dont know the specifics, but I definitely see a major difference between
the blu-ray and broadcast TV. Then again in HDTV's defense, I'm comparing
a rerun of two and a half men to Avatar I'll put it through it's paces
once it's all set up in the new house and I can relax and watch some stuff,
not to mention there is almost nothing on to watch until the fall season
starts. I may have to switch to comcast if the tree's get in the way of the
satellite <there are a TON of tree's in the new area>, and I cant get a
staight answer out of anyone about QAM. The best one I got was order it and
try it, and cancel it if it doesnt work. They really locked down a bunch of
channels out here.

I would think that if the LAN bandwidth is fast enough to accomodate it
that you should be able to have a "central" BluRay player, and use your
clients to access it directly.

Hey Bob,

Go into SageTV setup, one of the submenus (I forget which one just now,
not at my SageTV server) has the config for the DVD drives.

Beyond TV doesn't do DVDs, but I've used Power DVD for eons because I
bought the version that can decode DTS audio. About the only thing I ever
play on my DVD players is music DVDs, and many of them are encoded in DTS.

Inserting a DVD into any of my BTV clients will fire up Power DVD, and
begin playing the disk, but using my Firefly remote, I can also ake Power
DVD load images of DVD on HD, or navigate to DVDs on other machines,
provided they are shared.
