SONAR X1 has arrived

Well, today's the day. SONAR X1 is now available for purchase. The upgrade
($99 for SONAR 8.5 Producers users to get X1 Producer) comes with the
download. If you want boxed product, that has to be ordered separately, for
an extra $30 ($29.99 to be precise). That's a bit confusing as you can't
just specify the boxed product when on the page for ordering the download,
but rather have to add a separate "box-only" product, putting both items in
your shopping cart before checkout in their on-line store. They're giving
free shipping through later this month, via a promo code that is prominently
listed on pretty much every page I saw, from the updated marketing pages to
the ordering pages. That's about a $10 savings compared to normal.
However, it's close to a wash compared to last year as the boxed product
add-on was about $11 cheaper than it is this year.

I'm really glad I ordered the box. The download is currently going
sufficiently slow on my DSL connection that I'm thinking the boxed version
might actually arrive before the download finishes. :-) (Actually, I might
not even need the smiley face because past encounters with downloading large
files from Cakewalk's download servers have tended to result in a number of
hung downloads and restarts before I could get the files fully download, and
there are a number of big files here.)

The detailed list of new features is at:

http://www.cakewalk.com/Press/12-08-...w-Shipping.asp

As gleaned from the various videos and other earlier marketing materials, it
looks like the only SONAR-wide enhancements are in the overhaul of the user
interface. SONAR Producer also gets the ProChannel with the enhanced
channel strip and bus compressors, equalizers, and tube saturation built
into it.

Looking through the first file that did download (the Read Me First stuff),
they've definitely made a significant overhaul of the keyboard shortcuts.
That'll probably require a bit of adjustment for those of us who've gotten
used to the ones we've had to date. However, it does seem that the new
mappings are much more intuitive, so hopefully those will ultimately save
time once getting past the relearning curve.

More when I actually get the software installed and running. If the
download succeeds, that might be as early as tomorrow or Friday. Definitely
won't be today at the rate the download is going right now. :-(

Become a paid customer beta tester today!!! <g>

I'm seeing the usual amount of new improved dot zero bugs being announced,
and astonished purchasers that the glaring bugs from previous versions are
still there on the X1 forum. Same as it ever was. I used narrow mixer
faders exclusively in Sonar, so I'm glad I won't be dealing with the new
improved GUI experience!

I'm downloading now. 1st file is 3000 mb so it's gonna take some time.
I can't wait to see the new look.

Yeah, that one took close to 5.5 hours on my DSL. Second one is about 2.5
GB, and has already been going for aobut 2.5 hours and just hit the 51%
mark. I think those are the only two files, other than the relatively small
Read Me First thing, which I did earlier, I'll download as the rest
(Beatscape, Dimension Pro, and "Additional Content") can no doubt wait for
the DVDs to arrive. I'm not even sure if Beatscape or Dimension Pro need to
be updated as the updates that have come out since SONAR 8.5 may already
have gotten them to the same level.

Might actually get a chance to install this thing before going to bed
tonight.

My biggest curiosity at the moment is messing around with ProChannel to see
how it affects sounds/mix. I've seen so many videos on the look already,
that I'm not as curious about that, only about how it will affect efficiency
and productivity once I get used to it.

I can see some traditional Sonar users not liking this because of the
layout change but I could see it benefit those using multiple screens.

I finally figured out that Prochannel was built in.

IF there's a download problem you can resume the download

last night I started downloading both large files with gozilla, one
file did fine but the 2nd one stopped at 97% and there's no way I can
get gozilla to resume, I think it's because of that 300 min limitation
on Sonar's website. So I'll download the 2nd one tonight while
sleeping.

I don't think the 300 minute limitation affects a download already in
progress, only the URL's staying the same to start one. However, I'm not
positive on that. If it does affect the download in progress, that might
explain why the Part 1 file got corrupted in my initial download attempt as
I think it took about 5.5 hours to download in total.

I redownloaded that overnight, and now have a working SONAR X1 installation.
I'll post some first impressions soon. I think my summary to this point
would be that there are some things I'm going to really, really like, some
things that are likely to take some getting used to, and some things that,
unless I find workarounds/solutions, that may be a hassle.

I should note that I didn't use a download manager, just Internet Explorer,
which doesn't restart downloads if they fail. I can see why the 300 minute
limit might affect a download with a download manager if it failed partway
through and it had to restart after the 300 minutes had elapsed.
