    Windows XP Pro SP3
    Intel Core 2 2.4
    2 G RAM
Cubase Studio 4, latest rev 4.5?
    Echo Audio Fire vers 4.8

Got this running at 11.6 msec latency, it's the best I can comfortably do -
10.2 makes things a little unstable around the edges.

My main problem now is with th NI Komplete suite - Battery, Kontakt, FM8,
    Absynth, Massive.

They seem to feel "mushy" - i.e., with even a bit more latency from MDI
note-on than other VSTis, including a standalone installation of Reaktor.
They record and render OK from a MIDI track, but I am over-compensating for
the "mushiness" in playing and it is showing up in the MIDI recordings.

    Am I making any sense?

The latency you can set depends on the quality of your audio card and
    the quality of its driver.

The latency you will be actually able to use (eg without cracks and pops
and shcrounch) depends on the power of your PC, its ability to give all
of its power to the background tasks without being interrupted (here
lies the importance of the many audio tweaks for XP you can find on the
net), and again, the quality of the driver of your audio card.
When RME upgraded their driver vrom 2.9 to 3 for the hammerfall series,
many users gained something like 30% speed, latency-wise. I mean that
with the same hardware, they were able to lower their latency and still
    play scrounchless tune.

    No, it's not :)
Actually, 2 things are not making sense:

The latency you are currently achieving is what I had with my old AThlon
    2000+ (one core @ 1.7 GHz ! ).
    With a core2 quad Q9550, I can start working with a 1.5ms latency. I
finish many projects, with effects, midi, VSTi, streaming, etc... @ 6ms
    latency.
I even can make a simple vocal recording with 0.75 (<1ms) latency.

So a 11 ms latency is a bit disappointing for you hardware. Again: I
don't know about your audio card or its drivers.
And from what I know, above 10ms, I start to feel the mushiness,as you
    call it.

The 2nd thing that doesn't make sense to me is that you would have
different latency "feeling" with different VSTi.

My diagnostic would be that you are not using the correct driver.
Many card have an "ASIO multimedia" driver wich is not the one you want
to use. You want to use the other drivers featuring "ASIO" in its name.

PS: if you don't find the audio tweaks for XP, and if you do need them,
just ask. Someone might be able to post them here.

    This one, for instance:

Hurr durr - I had it configured to run SynCModular without glitches. Remove
SynC and 2.9 ms is easy. I will tweak further.

Bye bye SynCModular. I loved you.
