Hello everyone since it came out i own a Roland XP-30. I have always been very happy with it, and i have not followed the new products that came out. I think it is time to buy a new one, and i have been looking on the internet but i have a lot of questions. I am interested in the Fantom S . I know that there is a 88 keyboard version which is called the S88. And there are other ones like the x6, x7, x8 or the XA But i do know really know the difference. I am looking for a keyboard with 61 keys, the best accoustic piano sound there is and good brasses and strings. It must be expandle. I also want to know if i can listen to single patches somewhere on the internet , to find out which how they sound. What can you recommend me ? Are the sounds of the fantom series better than the XP series ? Does the fantom S have the same piano as the fantom X ? You can send me an email in dutch, german or english or reply in this newsgroup Thanks in advance R.Denessen
At least in the US, the Fantom S has been discontinued, replaced by the Fantom X. At the time of its inception, the Fantom X had the best piano that Roland built. Since that time, however, they've come out with a new piano patch that uses 3 samples per note times 88 notes. LOTS of samples, intelligently velocity-switched -- quite nice. This piano is currently only built-in to the RD700sx, a stage piano, and not the Fantoms. However, this piano is now also available on an SRX expansion board, the SRX-11 I think, which can be plugged in to the Fantom S or X series either. Both the S series and the X series come (or came) with either 61- or 76-note synth action keyboards, or 88-note hammer action. The X series also has a little brother, the XA, which does NOT have all of the new patches in the X series (I think they're S series patches, actually). I don't know if it'll accept the SRX expansion boards or not. I don't know if you can hear patches on the 'net or not. Hope that helps!
