Hi there, I plan to install cubase 5 64bits on a windows 7 64bits system. I've been told that the 32b version of cubase runs fine on a 64bits OS. Can both 32b and 64b version be installed without things being messed up? For instance, once can install cubase SX3 and Vubase 5 with no problem. But 2 versions of the same release? To answer the forthcoming and legitimate question "Why would you do that?", I will sum it up to "For test purposes that would not be of interest for many" Huey

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and have Cubase 5 installed in both 64 bit and 32 bit variants as well as SX3. In answer or to add to your question: 'why would anyone want to do that?' - some VSTi's and plugins don't work as expected with Cubase 5 64 bit version - namely (in my case) Steinberg Groove Agent 3 works with the 64 bit version, but will not export or allow MIDI data to be capured to a track or MIDI file, whereas in the 32 bit version of Cubase 5 GA does export data to a MIDI file or directly to a MIDI (drum) track for tweaking. Why SX 3? Because I have older projects that I've been doing a little work with which were recorded in VST 5 or earlier. Nick

So you have 3 cubase folder in you program files, right? I don't suppose the 32bit and the 64bit version would share a same folder. - > In answer or to add to your question: 'why would anyone want to do > that?' - some VSTi's and plugins don't work as expected with Cubase 5 64 > bit version - This is part of the tests I'm intending to do. As you can guess, I want to safely move to 64bis environment. But I certainly would not sacrifice stability over performance. The 32bit memeory issue is also a motive, but I still can manage to work nicely with 3.5GB Btw: what is you experience with extended use of memory with Cubase 5 32bits under Win7 64bit? Are you able to use more memory than you used to on a 32b OS? > Why SX 3? I have fairly large capacity drives and my OS/Programs drive has quite a lot of free space, so I didn't really consider it and used the default home installation folders: Program files for 64 bit and Programs Files (x86) for 32 bit. I doubt that it would work without some serious juggling of 64 bit specific program files and 32 bit program files of the same name to get anywhere near allowing two versions of Cubase 5 to live so close together in the same folder. I have 2 Cubase folders in my Program files (x86) folder for SX3 and 5 obviously. No, I'd say you were asking for trouble if you tried to get Cubase 5 64 bit and Cubase 5 32 bit to co-exist that closely. > - >> In answer or to add to your question: 'why would anyone want to do >> that?' - some VSTi's and plugins don't work as expected with Cubase 5 64 >> bit version > - > This is part of the tests I'm intending to do. > As you can guess, I want to safely move to 64bis environment. You know what - it hasn't been an issue with anything I've done so far . I'm not a huge VSTi user, so the most part of what I use will be audio recording (guitars, bass, vocals, real drums when room and sufficient isolation from close neighbours allows) features, and when I can't use real drums I will use a VSTi like Groove Agent or BFD of which neither are memory hogs particularly, and also I'll occasionally use a VSTi synth or two. I almost certainly haven't needed (yet) to go beyond the 3 - 3.5 GB real limit of a 32 bit OS, however I do believe that the fact the 32 bit applications are running in a 64 bit environemnt will allow for more VSTi's and other plugins to run in memory than under a 32 bit OS would should the need arise. It really depends on what physical limits are hard coded into the host program - in this case Cubase 5 32 bit - if any. > >> Why SX 3? I wasnot willing to mix 32b versions and 64b version. On the contrary, I was worried about this being the source of problems. So you answer my question, anyway: 2 seperate folders are created, so ther is no reason for conflict. - > No, I'd say you were asking for trouble if you tried to get > Cubase 5 64 bit and Cubase 5 32 bit to co-exist that closely. > I would too Like I wrote, I wasn't aiming at this. I'll post the results. Thx for sharing. Huey
