I need to buy my drummer and bass player a cheap version of cubase
that will work on windoze XP to records a single bass track and midi
from a midi drum set. I then need to be able to open the file in my
cubase 5 on my mac. What is the easiest cheapest route for me to go?
    Anyone have an idea???

Oh, I'm sending them an old Tascam US428 to record through if that
    makes any difference.

    Thanks

Doesn't sound as if it particularly needs to be Cubase - just any
sequencer which will play a MIDI file and record a wav. What's that
    free one?

I didn't particularly mean a free Cubase, just any free sequencer that
handles MIDI and audio (which means just about ANY sequencer).

OK, I figured that out later.. THanks. Looks like a tascam us122 comes
with what I need and the hardware will do the trick so I'm set.
thanks. We're old farts - He was my drummer 38 years ago just to date
    us :)

Is that Cubase LE?...Ideally it would be v LE4 which is great and
would do what you need...though it maybe an earlier version which
    would probably still suffice.

It might be worth considering 'Audacity'...that's freeware. I've never
played with it but its supposed to be pretty good. Also of note - this
month's 'Computer Music' magazine comes wth Samplitude 10 SE...its a
free cutdown version which looks as though it would be just the
    ticket.

I ended up buying a Tascam US-122 that came with cubase le4. It only
cost $129.95 shipped from American Musical Supply americanmusical.com
I looked around at a lot of things but my drummer isn't the biggest
nerd so I just figured to buy the simple way where he'd have support
    and all.
Thanks for your input. Lets hope he can get it together without me
driving 800 miles! He's in Sara Sota FL and I'm in Lafayette LA for
another 5 months. Foods good though:)

Plenty functions, but somehow a bit "strange" to use.
    For simple *audio-ONLY* multi-tracking, I prefer:
    http://kreatives.org/kristal/

fixed number of 16 audio-tracks, 2 inserts per track, supports VST effects
    and ASIO drivers.
NO MIDI support at all !!! So, no softsynths or -samplers can be used in the
    program.
So, if you need audio + MIDI at the same time, Kristal AE won´t be the right
    choice.
For audio-only projects, it´s a nice tracking software. It´s also possible
to use it for simple mixes, but I guess, even Cubase LE4 might be more
comfortable for that purpose. Anyway, it´s a nice, small and reliable tool
for live-tracking of performances or so, where you only get audio-feeds into
    the computer.

For "mastering" purposes, there´s another nice and small freeware program
    available now:
    http://www.wavosaur.com

also supports VST fx and ASIO drivers, so you can use the same fx, you use
    in other programs...
Very nice is, that it doesn´t even require an installation. Just download
and unzip it to a new folder, run "Wavosaur.exe", set audio driver and path
    to your VST plug-ins, done.
So, you can try it and easily get rid of it, without unwanted "side
effects", if you don´t like it or don´t want it.

With Audacity, both steps (multi-tracking AND 2-track editing/"mastering")
can be done in the same program. I just don´t get along very well with the
usability concept of audacity, compared to other audio programs.

It was included with a German computer magazine´s special "audio edition"
last month. Looks nice, can handle VST and DX fx and "virtual instruments",
audio and MIDI at the same time. Very useful tool for free... ;-)
The downside is, that the license is limited to a maximum of 5 "activations"
    only...
On the other hand, the commercial version is available for about 75 EUR/$,
which is a bit cheaper than similar "light" versions of Sonar or Cubase. The
features differ a little between all of those "cut down" versions, but
they´re mainly very similar. If you decide, you want to buy anything besides
the Cubase4 LE included with your Tascam, check the specs and choose what
    fits your needs better...
