Hi people. Can anyone tell me the best (quickest and easiest) way to export sessions done in Cubase SX3 to a format Pro Tools can easily import? I love recording with Cubase but my mastering engineer insists on mixing in Pro Tools (Jerk!). Matt

Next, export each of your tracks individually (or if you want to combine some into stems), with appropriate names (solo the track...export to 24bit wave if possible). In PT, import each of the resultant wave files to its own track. Since all tracks start at the same spot, they will be lined up when imported. Or you can use a translation utility that can read your Cubase SX files and transform them into PT files....big $$. HTH, CS

Is that even a thing? I know about Digitranslator, but it could only be used if Cubase was able to export OMF, am I right? Btw, I'm going to receive Cubase 5 in a few days. Is OMF export (import?) available in this version? Huey

In addition, other things can make PT choke such as multiple bit depths in a single session). Finally, as indicated, the Digi translator is not cheap. In my opinion, it is best to "print to track" any effects (saving the wet signal) and such that you want exported by bouncing it down and then go old school (individual tracks or stems with a common start point). Keep in mind that PT works best at 24bit depths. Here's a couple of threads that may be of help, http://audioengineering.tribe.net/thread/9c7428b1-16ee-4630-a554-d4431886027b http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/apr06/articles/cubasetech_0406.htm Regards, CS

But OMF would be very useful sometimes, just to be able to prepare simple sessions in cubase and then open it in Protools. ANd if you ask me, when one knows why OMF was created in the beginning, a software that exports uncompatible OMF only deserves to be called a "software that can't export OMF at all". It's a bit strange to take the time and do things if it's to do useless things, don't you think? On the other hand, it might be ProTools fault, but from what I read, it's not. Huey

The real issue seems to be that PT does not handle all of the AVID Open Media Framework standards...it only chooses to handle those that it supports. Thus, interleave stereo and heterogeneous bit depths are not supported in PT (though they are part of the standards). The error handling for these unsupported "formats", leaves something to be desired. Keep in mind, OMF is not just for audio (indeed, AVID stores Audio in AIFF files and video in OMFI). In any event, if you look at any other application that supports OMF (CS4, DP, Final Cut Nuendo)...PT has problems with each an everyone of their OMF files (to one extent or another). Finally, running a Cubase OMF to AVID does not typically produce errors...and PT does seem to behave better with AVID OMF saves...so perhaps the extra import\export step is beneficial. -CS
