So I decided to get my old Sequential Circuits Prophet 2002
rackmount sampler out to see if it would even read some of the
old floppy disks with samples. It read a few of them, so I made
a test file to illustrate how crummy sounding the first gen samplers
were. If this thing worked perfectly and read all the disks without
any errors, I still wouldn't use it, even though I paid close to a
grand for it in the early 80s.

All the samples are heavily compressed sounding, and they have some
patches where they split the keyboard with a slap bass on the left
and organ or guitar on the top, dup the samples and make it 5ths,
or put stupid filter wahs on things like acoustic guitar.

The last two sounds in this recording are ones me and a friend did
at a 24 track studio with a tenor sax and a Yamaha grand. The piano
sample disk was riddled with errors and only the top section worked.

Anyway, here's what a thousand dollar 12-bit 15 pound piece of
hardware from the 80s sounds like! <g>

I didn't listen. Was it any good? Did you choose cool sounds and do
    anything special with them? ;)

Hehe, I used to live at the music store, playing around with all
the keyboards and synths for hours on end. One that I always
liked screwing around with was the "Orchestron", which had clear
plastic records that you inserted into the keyboard to load a
sound. They had a series of dots that were the sampled sounds.

    Here's a flute disk.

    http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_FMBJEkaC8Lw/RuQlHBUR0dI/AAAAAAAAIL0/tRJZBlFTzQI/s400/75a0_1.JPG

And the keyboard it goes in.

Back in the late 70s and early 80s it was "Rock World". Same place I
bought my huge set of Ludwig drums. I did also hit all those other stores
though too. In fact, I bought an 88 wooden key Roland MKB1000 from Norman
Music, and I went to school with the dood who started Irate Musician.

hee hee He used to always tell me all he sold was junk. I never
understood that kind of comment coming from a businessman like that.

I bought one of my JUNO-106s from him. Was in a band with one of his
    employees.

Actually some of those samples aren't half bad considering how primitive the

I always liked my old Juno 106. It did good clav and other percussive
    sounds.

Back in 1989 when I got this one, it was a hot instrument. I also
had the keyboard version, which was the Prophet 2000. There's a
short clip of me, Joey Who??? (guitar), Tar Nation (bass), and DJ
playing my old P2000 in the floor. It was a keg party at my place.
I used to pull all the shelves out of my refrigerator, buy a keg to
stick in there, and then invite all my friends over, half or more
who were musicians. It always turned into jam night with video. ;)

None of us had ever played this song live or together, and I was
surprised at how close we hit this section, so I made a clip of it.
