I've been using Gigastudio on a 2nd computer as another synth in my chain of external synths. So I have everything just daisy chained together. In order to complete the chain using Gigastudio, in the past with Win98SE, I've successfully created a Midi Thru by opening up Giga and then Sonar. Sonar defaults to midi thru, the so the midi signal goes into my Midiman midi interface and all the midi info passing into the Midi IN is echoed out the Midi out, making it behave like a Midi Thru This all works just fine with Win98SE, but with Gigastudio 2.54 and Sonar 2.2 or 3.1.1 and XP, I can't get the midi thru to work. If I start Sonar then I get Midi Thru, but when I start Giga then the Midi Thru is disabled. Or if I start Giga first, the Midi in works fine, but when I start Sonar then the audio output of Giga is disabled. I've tried starting Sonar from within Giga with no success. It's surprising Gigastudio doesn't have a way to echo the Midi in to the Midi out, effectively creating a Midi Thru without involving Sonar, you would think it could be done within Giga. If there's a way, educate me. I'm using a Gina 20 in my Giga computer and Midiman Biport. I can't find a way to have the Biport echo the midi in either. Unless someone else has a solution, I guess I'll have to buy a Midi spitter box GP
Hi Gerry, Have you considered a "virtual" midi router? http://www.musiclab.com/products/rpl_info.htm It works very well when routing midi to an other machine, over the network, ( no cables necessary ) and also within one machine it works as a virtual midi router. I use 4 "pipe-outs" to feed Giga midi when Giga is on the same box as Sonar. It's very slick. It has an "echo to" option with a dropdown menu that allows you to choose the port ( single port only it seems ) to echo to. I know, Sonar and that Midi Thru thing is really wacky for me too. I can't find a way to enable and disable it other than the little button on each track. One of the downgrades from CWPA9 in my opinion. There should also be a global option to turn it on and off but ... whatever. An other possibility is that I hear that MidiYoke works on XP? I used to use Hubi on Win98SE. >>Have you considered a "virtual" midi router?<< that the sort of thing I need, yet for $69 I may decide instead to get a hardware box. The MidiYoke works with XP, but it's apparently still in the beta stage, it's free and that's always good. Considering all I really need is a Midi Thru type of thing, I hope I can just find a free software solution or maybe something around $29, which is about what something like that should be worth GP On Sun, 27 Jun 2004 08:41:20 GMT, "Steve Karl" <> wrote: >Hi Gerry, > >Have you considered a "virtual" midi router? >http://www.musiclab.com/products/rpl_info.htm > >It works very well when routing midi to an other machine, over the network, >( no cables necessary ) >and also within one machine it works as a virtual midi router. >I use 4 "pipe-outs" to feed Giga midi when Giga is on the same box as Sonar. >It's very slick. >It has an "echo to" option with a dropdown menu that allows >you to choose the port ( single port only it seems ) to echo to. > >I know, Sonar and that Midi Thru thing is really wacky for me too. >I can't find a way to enable and disable it other than the little button on each track. >One of the downgrades from CWPA9 in my opinion. >There should also be a global option to turn it on and off but ... whatever. > >An other possibility is that I hear that MidiYoke works on XP?
gerry, MidiYoke has been in Beta mode for years. Give it a try. I use MidiYoke on both Win2k and WinXP without trouble. BUT have not tried to go over a network to another machine, so don't know about that. Using it on the same machine works fine. -- Sue Morton "Steve Karl" <> wrote in message news:iBxDc.18741$... > gerry, > > MidiYoke has been in Beta mode for years. > Give it a try. > Steve > > "Gerry Peters" <> wrote in message news:... > > >>Have you considered a "virtual" midi router?<< > > > > that the sort of thing I need, yet for $69 I may decide instead to get > > a hardware box. Midi OVer LAN should work. Midi Yope should not be use with Gigastudio on W2K. Got that as word from Tascam. Some gigastudio users have had trouble with midi yoke on XP as well. Still seems to work fine on W98. >> Midi OVer LAN should work. << In my case if I understand correctly, I'm not running midi over LAN, I have physical midi cables in a daisy chain connecting several external synths including my 2nd Giga computer I've never even thought of midi over LAN, do you mean that my DAW would use mdi yoke and connect to another midi yoke on my Giga computer all without involving a midi cable? I guess I'd be concerned of timing errors GP On Sun, 27 Jun 2004 19:09:57 GMT, "kitekrazy" <> wrote: > Midi OVer LAN should work.
