I've used cubase since about version 2 but I haven't ever dealt with
ivst's or samplers. I always just use cubase to capture what I play or
    someone else's playing.

OK, I was to branch out a bit. I have the sound set 1 for Halion that
was free and I started messing with it. I'm a little impressed with
what I can do with my midi drum set and the sounds there. I'd like to
try out more things, especially piano and keyboard sound libraries but
    also everything else.

Where do I look, what is good and what should I have to pay? Also, if
there are any free libraries, I'd like to start there first.

Thanks for the help - I'm a total newbie on this stuff

You can get the Halion sound set directly from Steinberg - it's free.

I have the "sound set 1" but I'm sure there is more to have. Any
    recommendations?

    Thanks

I only use it for utility sounds so I haven't looked for others - but I
prowl kVr regularly and I haven't really heard of any.

Native Instruments has 2 free VSTi plug-ins, which also have stand-alone
versions besides the plug-in versions. As you seem to be a piano/keyboard
player/performer, this might come in handy for you, if you only want the
sounds "live", but don´t need a sequencer host software taking up
    resources... ;-)

The first one is called "Kore Player" and the second one "Kontakt Player".
Both are available free and at least KorePlayer includes a sound set. In
addition to that, free sound sets can be downloaded separately! Of course,
you can also buy more sound sets, but there should be something usable in
    the free ones.

NOTE: you need to register with NI to request the download links!

    http://www.native-instruments.com/#/en/products/?search=freeware

It should at least be a good place for a start. If you don´t like the sounds
in the free packages or can´t really use them for your purposes, you haven´t
lost money, but only some time...

    Good luck and fun!

    Phil

Thanks for the link Phil. I'll go check that out right away. I
actually had thoughts of good drum and percussion sounds bouncing
around in my head. I think live would be a disaster for me. I have 3
88 key boards anyway. I often use an electric drum kit to play parts
with but the sounds don't rarely match my expectations. Rather then
getting a real drum set re-recorded on the song, I thought I might mix
and fiddle with the sounds I am using.
I'm no newbie to recording- actually, worse, I'm old school and have a
hard time fitting into the digital world. It would be easier if I was
new to it.... its like a bad habit you have to break first, before you
    relearn.

    Thanks again

    Danny
