Cubase 5, 64 bit version, Vista Premium, quad core, 8GB ram. I just can not figure out how to get a video file to import and play in Cubase, very frustrating. I have read the instructions here: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/nov05/articles/cubasetech.htm but I just can not get a video file to import and play no matter what I try, Cubase keeps giving me an error that it can not play it. Tried rendering (from Sony vegas) an avi file with Cinepak, mpg with Cinepak codec, nothing seems to give me a video file that will open and play in Cubase. Any ideas? Help greatly appreciated. What is the fricken secret to getting a video file on a track in Cubase and have it play, and also play in a video player window (F8)? I did configure the Devices: Video: Playback (only options tehre are DirectShow Video and Video for Windows; no option there for Quicktime playback). randall

The link in my original post was to an article that said the Microsoft Video 1 codec did not work with Cubase. But then I just found this forum post that says that the MS Video 1 coded solved the problem, worked! http://www.cubase.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?p=810292&sid=01726acf15d732f272aa4ca1f36a1325 So i just rendered a video as an 640x480 AVI and used the Microsoft Video 1 codec and then opened it into a new Cubase 5 project and it loaded just fine, showed thumbnails, and when I pressed F8 I had a little window showing the video which would play as the Cubase timeline scrolled. Awesome. I even added a midi file to hear and see some music play while the video played. So I sort of solved the problem for now, but I will gratefully accept in other tips to making video import and viewing a better experience in Cubase. So frustrating when it did not work. Oh yeah, I had also gone to cubase.com but the site was worthless-- the links to the FAQ and Forum were not working, browser just spinning its wheels. randall

Be it a free version. Have you tried with both renders (Dx and VfW)? What are the exact dimension of the files you tried to import? (in pixels) What color depth do they use? Can your reproduce the error with all the small video files you can find or are some of them accepted? I guess you have several video players on your system. Can you find one that refuses to play the problematic files? Huey

This is an open source multi-codec that will allow you to try several codecs. I use it in a 32bit environment, in order to make MJPG files to work within cubase. I chose s MJPG because it's a codec that does'nt rely on other frames to decode one. It makes video "scrubing" more easy, CPU wise. This is a personnal considerationand many will tell you the use other codecs with no problems. At least with ffdshow, you can try many of them Anyway, MJPG from ffdshow works flawlessly whereas a commercial MJPG codec was clearly bugging cubase for no reason. again: I'm not useing a 64bit OS. But I think ffdshow is available for 64bits OS. Huey
