Thanks to those who offered suggestions, none of which, by itself, solved the problem. But by combining all the suggestions, plus adding an unhealthy dose of obsessive perseverance, I have finally gotten Cubase to run. It turns out, that simply removing the app icon doesn't remove all the program, at least, not in the case of Cubase. Also, there WERE remnants of ReWire in there, apparently installed by a demo version of Ableton, or by Logic, which seems to have been on this computer at one time (before I got it). Anyway, I could not believe the stray files I found lurking after at least a dozen attempts to uninstall Cubase and Ableton. Nor could I believe how adept Mac OSX is at hiding these files; I still haven't a clue where they actually were; I just kept finding and moving to trash. I am now finished complaining about Windows - it can't hold a candle to OSX for 'no user-serviceable components inside'. My wife and my dog left me. But I can now record on Cubase, so I'm ok.
