    Greetings all!

Long ago and far away I got Cubase SX 1.0.6, installed it on my
Powerbook, and made a bunch of projects. I was really pretty happy with
that version of Cubase, but I got away from music and the projects sat
    unused for years

Now I'm in a new "band" and so dusted off Cubase and began recording
our rehearsals, live, on 2 tracks (through the laptop's stereo Sound In
port). I wanted to record more live tracks, like 8, so I got an Alesis
Multimix12 firewire (for a great price, used, but WITHOUT the bundled
LE disk) and hooked it up. SX 1.0.6 is working fine with it, but it
only lets me record 4 tracks at once.

I'd like to get another version of Cubase that'll record 8 tracks. With
my pauper's budget I can afford "LE 1.something" from eBay, or
"Essential 5". I can't seem to find SX 1 in any comparison charts, nor
do I see any downloadable upgrades for it.

Would I lose (or gain) a lot going from SX 1.0.6 to LE 1 (using
    1.0.10.110 upgrade) or Essential 5?

(OR) Are there any free/cheap recording-only packages for MacOS X 10.4,
like the good-looking but Windows-only Kristal
    (http://kreatives.org/kristal)?

Thanks very much for any light you can shed on these matters!

    Prospero

    Hi, Prospero.
I have the same version as yours.

First, you might check that this restriction really exists.
I don't not think it does.

Please describe to us the manipulations and results that lead you to
think that Cubase 1.0.6 could not record more than 4 tracks at once.

Maybe you have only 4 input channels set up. I don't know the exact
geography of Cubase 1.0.6. But can you find the page where you set up
    input and output busses?

    Peripherals/VST inputs

    You should see 3 columns:
Left column is "port". You should have listed all the physical inputs of
    your audio card.
Center column is an on/off button column only (active/not active)
And right column is the corresponding names you gave to your physical
inputs. By defaults, they are "input 1", "Input 2" and so on.

Propsero, can you tell us what you see in your panel?

If you have only 4 channels activated here, you cannot record more than
4 channels (since only 4 channels will be available in each new audio
    track setting).
Activating more channels (if physically available, of course), should
enable you to make what you want to do.

    Well thanks; what a revelation!

I've set up a new project from scratch and do indeed have all 14 tracks
    recording simultaneously!

Apparently like Chico Marx in Duck Soup "I didditt wrong" on my first
attempt - I had Cubase seeing all the Multimix channels, and assigned
them all to tracks, but when actually record-enabling the tracks, after
I'd enabled 4, enabling a fifth would cause one of the first 4 to "go
out". Cubase would only actually record-enable 4 at once.

Somehow I was just ready to think this was a program limitiation,
rather than my own incomptence I mean "unfamiliarity with the new
    setup".

I followed a procedure like this: selected Devices / Device Setup / VST
Multitrack and set ASIO Driver to my firewire mixer.

Then I did Devices / VST Inputs and enabled all 7 pairs of inputs.

Now when I create a project with 14 audio tracks and associate each
track with one of the In's, I can record-enable all 14 at once. This is
the same procedure I (thought I) followed before, so I guess I just
    screwed up somehow.

Thanks so much for your responses, Huey and Laurence! If you have any
further suggestions I'd be glad to hear them, but I (think I) have it
    (somewhat) together now.
