I'm getting an average of 4 emails a week from them.

There's a rant on the CW forum about that promo:
    http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=2032532

I don't think I got the email myself, and I'm a loyal customer, but I
can't be bothered about it; I got 8.5 when I did cos I needed
something it had, and that's that. Things always get a lot cheaper
after I get them anyway; it's like Murphy's law. Like I got my Droid
two months ago, and now they're giving buy one get one free.

I get no emails from them any more. I un-subscribed coz I was tired of
them spamming me 4 or more times a week. Heck, I have a hundred bucks I
could blow right now, but I'm not blowing it on that. I'm just going to
hang onto it for the time being.

As someone noted on the thread I mentioned, Sonar 9'll be out in a
couple months anyway and there'll be deals for that; seems like that
would be the time to upgrade if you were gonna.

Nah, I'm off the Sonar upgrade bandwagon (I don't need any more plugins),
although I will definately pop for Reaper 4 when it finally comes around.
Till then, I'll just keep getting the free 3.x Reaper updates that my
    current license covers.

I'm thinking of doing the upgrade. I'm only up to version 5 - which
works fine for me, but surely they've improved the UI and other things,
    right?

Also, I have the idea that one of the last couple Sonar versions are
required for Windows Vista and 7. Is that correct? Or would Sonar 5
    work on the new OSs?

I do like Reaper, and I appreciate its low cost and big features and
stability, but I just can't seem to get as comfortable with it as I am
with Sonar. I have to struggle more to get things done in Reaper.

I haven't received an email from them for years. I don't remember
opting out of their ad list. I did get the post card offer about a week
    ago.

I had Sonar 5 installed on Vista home premium and it worked just fine. I
later upgraded to Win 7 by installing it on top of Vista and it didn't
change anything I had on Vista. Sonar 7 works just the same as it did on
    Vista.

That's all you need for the upgrade. The say they will check their data
base to see if you qualify for that offer when you order.

It all depends on what you use and your preferences, but there are certainly
loads of UI enhancements since SONAR 5. Even just since SONAR 8, 8.5 has
made a pretty big overhaul of the AudioSnap interface, but that didn't even
come along at all until SONAR 6. There have also been improvements that
streamlined things like setting up insert buses, new Solo features (e.g. Dim
Solo is a major productivity boost for my purposes, and I think that one
    came along in SONAR 8).

Depending on what you have and like on the plug-in and softsynth front,
there are also lots of new, and excellent quality, toys, especially in the
Producer Edition package, though some things have been added to the Studio
    version, as well.

    > Also, I have the idea that one of the last couple Sonar versions are
    > required for Windows Vista and 7. Is that correct? Or would Sonar 5
    > work on the new OSs?

As someone else already replied, SONAR 5 would probably work okay on the new
operating systems. It would not, however, have the enhanced engine-level
features that take advantage of the enhancements that came along in Vista
and Windows 7, such as related to audio prioritization, nor the more general
engine-level enhancements, such as in the area of multiprocessor/multicore
    load balancing improvements.

I didn't catch what the upgrade price from SONAR 5 to SONAR 8.5 Producer
was, but if you can get that far for $99, it seems to me like a no brainer
upgrade if you are actually still using SONAR regularly.

I don't think I get that many, but I do get kind of pissed that I keep
getting e-mails from them, and recently even a snail mail, with offers to
upgrade to SONAR 8.5. I might not mind it so much except that I upgraded to
SONAR 8.5 long ago -- I might have even preordered it prior to ship date --
and I registered the product and everything. Either they're just blasting
all their customers with the same messages or they're doing a really lousy
    job of database filtering.

I paid a bit over $99 since I got the version with the DVDs instead of the
download -- that's a big benefit when there is need to reinstall from
scratch such as I had to do after I upgraded to Windows 7 from Windows XP.
Even if I'd paid more, though, there's something to be said for upwards of
six additional months of usage I got out of the product that those who are
just buying now won't have gotten.

This offer probably is for the DVD version since the order page states that
a DVD player with DL is necessary to install.

Actually that's what I did too, come to think of it. That's why the
$99 figure didn't click at first, cos I went for the DVD version, I
think I did download + DVDs. It was a preorder deal.

Haven't got any e-mails recently and certainly no post cards but,
I tried the link above. Not really sure what constitutes a "loyal customer"
nor did I see any clarification on the CW site.
I did find a link to my registered products though.(Sonar 2.0 XL, Sonar 7
    Producer)
Musta bought enough stuff from them cause they allowed me to purchase 8.5

$99 is a pretty fair price. You should have some fun with it.

If you hit any snags with the operation of Reaper, don't hesitate to drop
in on their forum and ask questions. Whole lot of current and ex-Sonar
users over there, who will be familiar with what you are trying to make
work like what you are used to in Sonar. I spent a week or two over
there getting my copy of Reaper to work like I like to work, and pretty
much every question I had was instantly answered by Sonarites who knew
what I was going for, and how to make it happen in Reaper.

    NEW 450 W power supply
    NEW Gigabyte MoBo GA-EP43-UD43L
Used Intel Core 2 Duo E6850
    NEW Patriot 4GB DDR2
Used Seagate 700 GB SATA HDD
    NEW Hitachi 2TB SATA HDD
    NEW NVidia PCI-E w/512MB VRAM
    Used Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS
    Used M-audio ProFire2626

Sounds like it should be a capable machine.

    Good luck finishing it out!
