    Hi people
I'm looking to get another drive as my WD MYbook is getting long in the
tooth and I need to back up more stuff.
First I guess I'm still not sure what my best option is regarding internal
    or external?
What are the pros and cons? I wont initially be running samples from the
drive but would like to have that as an option
should I wish in the future so that maybe be a deciding factor.

My initial question was this, I have an eSata storage caddy that is Sata-11
and the drive I'll be getting will be a sata-111 drive.
Is there any point in using that caddy since it can't match the speed of the
    drive that I'll be buying?
Secondly, if I'm going to get an external drive am I better off with another
mybook rather than an internal drive in a caddy?
I'm looking at the new WD Mybook USB 3
    (http://www.scan.co.uk/Pro...5-External-HDD-USB-30)

The cheaper option would obviously be to get an internal drive but is it the
    best option?

    Cheers
    Steve

If it's a drive to be used for backing up, I'd definately get an external.
The idea being for one, that it's not connected to your computer when it
gets struck by lightning, or whatever causes the main drive to fail. ;)

I'd avoid the pre packaged "help mom 'n' pop think they're backing up" drives.
I belive they're probably factory seconds that can't be sold as a raw drive so they hide them in a cheap plastic
box and bundle them with junkware.

For the last few yrs. I've always got:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817173043

and mount a WDC "Black" in it.

I use one of these docking stations and just drop the drive into it.
The drive runs real cool out naked in the open air. Some of those boxes are
drive killers if they don't have good ventilation. I lost one good drive in
one of them and was about to lose another. I have several SATA drives and
just plug them in the dock when I need one.

That's a nice idea ... especially the quick swap part of it.

One of the reasons I picked the one I linked to is that it has a nice big fan that is also very quiet.

I must admit GB, lightning wasn't top of my list of reasons for
preferring an external drive, I mean.........what are the chances
    eh? :)
Guess that can depend on where in the world you live.

So you think those western digital mybooks are the lower end of their
product range? I mean the one I have is very quiet and well ventilated
and has been pretty good but it's getting pretty full and they all
have a limited shelf life so it might be time I got another.

Yeah I have seen these and wondered if they might be an option.
The only obvious weakness to me was they might be a bit vulnerable as
they are unprotected but then I have neither cat nor dog nor children
so that would just leave me as the likely blunderer who would spill
tea all over it. As far as costing goes I was thinking there's little
in it. Yes the mybook is more expensive but when you add the cost of
the caddy, or docking bay together there's not much in it.
    Hmmmm, decisions decisions........

I got one of these NAS systems a few months ago:

    <http://www.synology.com/enu/products/DS410/index.php>

and I'm really happy with it. I put two drives in so far, and I have one
backing up to the other at a scheduled time; I back my stuff up from
various machines, and the NAS drive makes an extra copy automatically.
It's really easy to set up, responsive, has a good GUI and lots of
useful features (like scheduled startup and shutdown). And if the unit
were ever to die, I could just take the drives out, put them in a caddy,
and get at the data easily. It takes four drives, but I only have two in
right now. I'll add another one when 3TB drives come down to a
    reasonable price, I think.

One of the drives in it came from the POS Apple TimeCapsule I was daft
enough to buy -- lasted only about a year and a half, but I was able to
gut it and pull out the drive, which was fine.

    Cheers,
    Martin

It's just a guess. I have no proof but it makes sense to me.

    Steve

Yes, if you were only going to dock one drive. As I stated, I have three
SATA drives I dock in it and will probably have more in the future. The
quick change bit is what I like about a docking port.

Hot swap capable plus like G'Bo said, the drives run very cool sitting
upright and open, are the winning features for me. I use several of these
docks. Most that I bought can connect with eSATA or USB as desired and will
accept SATA or IDE drives (a couple I have are USB only and will only accept
    IDE, these were cheaper).

For me, I always buy the docks that accept two drives. I nearly always have
two external drives online so that suits my workflow better, and as a bonus
it is just one external power supply and only needs one port on the machine
for the two drives. The docks I buy have power switches for each drive, so
they can run a single drive only if desired. The most I've paid is around
$30 and all are still working fine after a couple of years of daily use. If
you don't mind the appearance or can tuck them out of sight these are
superior to drive enclosures IMO. The brands I've bought are StarTech,
IcyDock, Rosewill, Vantec and probably a few others. I've found no
appreciable difference in the brands as long as I select one with all the
features I need as mentioned above. YMMV of course :)

I have the *free* version of Yellow Tools Independence, which didn't give
me any grief, but I wasn't impressed enough to buy any of their stuff. For
a softsynth with a lot of various instruments, the free Proteus VX is my
goto plugin. It's sounds are mostly, if not all from the Emu library,
which are good quality and very playable sounds. The price is right too!

Ha, ha. Speaking of that Yellow Tools just upgraded Independence.
Their stuff sucks. I guess copy protection is better than product
    development.

They want you to sign up for their newsletter, but you can give 'em a bogus
    email address. ;)
