<X-Posted so both sides of the house can get a look>

I decided to try and capture a pic of Jupiter while it is missing one of
it's two signature cloud bands, and got lucky tonight. (no not that!!!)

I took approximately 30 videos at varying different shutter speeds and gain
settings. I finally found one I liked to do a stacked image with, and
here's the final end result. An image of a one striped Jupiter. :)

I have some videos where you can see the moons, but when the gain is up
that high, it overexposes the planet, and you can't see any detail at all
because it looks like a Sun or something. I'm thinking that tomorrow I
might try to find the best shot I got of where you can see the moons, and
then composite the two images together into one.

    understood
what multiplier/power? from the size of the object in that field it
looks like at least 100X or more. Or is the pic zoomed a bit afterward?

either way, the definition is superb! It's a kick to put an eyeball on
that, kind of like reaching out and touching it a little bit in real
time. Some of my best memories as a kid of grammar school, was filing
down to the gym to watch feature lenght 35mm movies about the solar
system, sitting in the dark on the floor, transfixed.

No zoom in or out was used. It was captured as a 640x480 .avi file, and
then stacked. My scope has a 400mm focal length and has a built in 2x
Barlow lens (which I was using) and the camera is supposed to be similar in
focal length to a 5mm lens so (400x2/5)=160x approximately.

Hehe, I used to bug the crap out of my sister's 6th grade science teacher
when I was in the 5th, because they had one of those solar systems with
gears and a crank handle. I was totally amazed by the precision of the
multiple orbits going on, and wanted to study it more. Ever since then
I've been totally into astonomy. :)

Thanks Sue! That was a 24 frame video done at 20fps with the gain turned
all the way down. Then I pulled it into a program called Registax that
aligns each of the frames, and gives you multiple sliders to turn up or
down the level of different groups of frames. This pic is actually just a
bit more clear than what you actually see looking through the scope.

I did a composite frame using the pic you've already seen, and another one
I did this morning using an overexposed video where you could see five
moons in orbit around Jupiter. Here's the two images composited.
