    Hi all,

    I have an intermittent problem,

I use Cubase LE (latest 2006 version) mainly as a midi sequencer
driving outboard gear. No soft synths at all - just some audio mainly
    for loops/ guitar.

    Sometimes everything records fine.
Sometimes when recording a midi track there is a huge delay. Up to
half a second. Stop the sequencer and the delay goes away immediately.
The problem can arrive and then disappear mid session just by starting
and stopping the track several times.

I have tried 2 different MIDI interfaces and it happens with both.

    This is the setup:

    DV pc
    Audiophile 2496
    Cubase LE
    XP Home

The other midi interface is a MOTU PC-MIDI Flyer. The problem happens
whether that is used or not, and installed or not.

Remember this is LE so no port filter to play with!!

Any ideas? Have just ordered a USB Midi cable to see if only using the
2496 for audio will help, though as I say when I used the PC-MIDI
Flyer I got the same issues.

    Thanks in advance...

What do you have in your Windows setup? (Control panel > Sounds and audio
device properties/Audio - MIDI music playback)

Make sure the device you're using is selected and that no virtual devices
    are in that slot..

Default MIDI playback was set to the GS Wavesynth - I have changed it
now and will see how things are affected!

OK tried that, re-started and it's still the same. Same MIDI thru
delay when the track is playing back but not while stopped.

    Any more ideas anyone?

Dunno if this will solve your problem...its been awhile since I've
used LE, but there ought to be a VST tab under files/preferences. If
so, there is a buffer size setting that you can play with (presumably
decreasing it will decrease your delay). There may even be a latency
box that you can adjust. Sorry for being vague, but I've never had the
issues you speak off, so can only suggest places to look.

Surely if that were the issue I would get the delay all the time?
Remember this is not audio delay - it's a delay on the midi thru and
it comes and goes, sometimes mid track. Anyway have done the buffer
size detect and tested it and the ASIO is working fine.

Do you have auto-quantize on? Just a thought.

"Buffer size detect" sounds like the MME driver, not the M-Audio ASIO
driver. Are you sure you've selected the right driver?

Are you taling about LE4? I'm using that version right now for
reasons explained in another post here.

Yes I've come accross an intermittent latency issue as well. I suspect
that the midi handling is somewhat restricted with this
version...something to do with note on and off information. I have a
cheap midi keyboard which I use when travelling/ laying down quick
ideas. It worked fine with Cubase 4 and 5..but not with LE4. Strange
thing is that when I use my Edirol PCR30 controller LE4 behaves just
    as it should.

It isn't a big deal for me as I don't include much in the way of
keyboards on my material...but the bottom line is that, while LE4 is a
great, it is a very stripped down version. You might consider Cubase 4
Eseential edition...its reasonably cheap...particularly if you can
find a 2nd hand copy on Ebay or wherever(£80-90 UK currency). I would
expect all the midi functions to be working correctly with that
    version.

No it's nothing to do with that - the notes RECORD at the right place
    - they just don'y PLAY in time when you record them. If you can
mentally ignore the monitored Midi or turn the volume off then
    recording is fine

    Two possibilities...

Using a software synthesizer that has a built in latency (Microsoft's
GS Wavetable SW Synth). Or using a VST software instrument with your
audio card's buffers set too high. (Try 256 or 128)

Using an emulated (or sometimes non-emulated) MIDI IN port.
Try switching between various input ports.

Read up on "ignoreportfilter", it will be in a directory found in the
in the Program Files/Steinberg/Cubase LE folder.

Sorry AP but as I said before this is nothing to do with soft synths
or a VST instrument - I don't use either. All hardware (Tish, young
    folk today...)

Also LE has no port filter.

No - does it under ASIO4ALL too. But just to make sure I just
uninstalled the 2496 and re-installed brand new delta series driver
from M-audio's site. Restarted and sure enough within 5 mins of using
LE the thru delay came back.

So I can rule out the driver.

And I'd be amazed if this is a Cubase LE fault - I am sure others
would have found the same thing and it would have been corrected. It's
a pretty big stumbling block not being able to monitor what you are
    recording!

So if it's not the driver and not the hardware (would not be
intermittent if it was) and not Cubase what the hell can it be? I
wonder if the 2496 just isn't very good at handling limited midi and
audio at the same time - that's wy I have ordered a USB midi cable.

Ok, same still applies as it's a MIDI Input problem and can be caused
    by a couple of things.

Using emulated or sometimes even the non-emulated MIDI port.

There's not a folder in the LE directory named "MIDI Port Enabler"
with a 0 byte file "ignoreportfilter" inside?

If it's there move the file into LE's root directory and all MIDI
ports will become available. (this may be the problem)

You can create the ignoreportfilter file in Notepad.

Open notepad, select save as, name the file ignoreportfilter
with no extension. Move it into LE's root directory. You sould now see
all available MIDI ports both emulated and non-emulated.

    A remote possibility...
A PC running in both ACPI and APIC mode. (how old is your machine?)
All I/O is channeled through a single IRQ, every once in a while
Windows decides that other devices may need access, then there can be
pauses and or MIDI delay. Usually restarting fixes this for a while.

Ahhh.. just saw your post to Laurence...

The latest M-audio drives caused MIDI delay (when using more than one
or two tracks) on my system with an Audiophile 24/96.

I reverted to an older set of drivers and MIDI worked perfectly again.

I'm using ver 5.10.0.5057, which seems to work perfectly.

Where would I get an older driver?

    From M-Audio´s driver download page.
    - select "Delta Series" - "Delta 2496" and then "Win XP (SP 2)"
    - above the "Results" list there´s a little checkbox for "Show older
    releases"

Here´s a direct link to the results page - not sure, if it works for you.

Anyway, make sure to select XP SP2 as your operating system, if you´re
looking for older driver versions - even though your machine probably runs
    SP3.

    Good luck,

    Phil

    Ooh, Ooh, Mr Peavley....

We may have a cure! Have the old driver in place and all seems fine
    for now!

If it's solved big thanks to all especially Aphelion and Phil.

    If not I'll be back!
