I don't really understand what the deal with the midi ports is. I know that data is supposed to go through these ports. The idea is that if I have to hook up an external controller to a keyboard what kind of MIDI port does the keyboard need to have? IN/OUT/THRU.

It really is pretty straight forward. If you wish to control the keybooard from an external source, then use the midi "in" on the keyboard (and mid "out" on the control device. When you wish to chain midi devices together, use the midi "thru" on the devices for which you need to only pass along the midi information. Check you
keyboard owners manual and read up on it's midi functionality, especially any information regarding "local on/off" modes and hope that applies to what you are doing.
