So I've got my Battery/drum sample player loaded & am recording on #1 MIDI, VSTi #1 track. How do I set #2 MIDI, VSTi #1 track and so forth. In other words, I want to use a kit's kicks, hi hats and snare but record and quantize each sub-track separately without setting up a different instance of the kit in another instance of Battery. It was easy to do when I had a hardware drum sample module.

Isn't it a question of adding a MIDI track and pointing it to the same VSTi? It sounds as if you are using an Instrument track, which is fine for the first instance, but for subsequent tracks on the same instrument, you want a MIDI track. Unless I misunderstand your problem. Yes, don't install Battery as an Instrument Track. Insert it in the VST Instruments rack, then you can point as many MIDI tracks as you like at it.
