Out of the blue, I received the gift of a brand new i7 laptop from my Bass Player. I have spent the last 36 hours trying to get Sonar 8.5 to work on it AND I AM GIVING UP FOR THE NIGHT. This thing came with Windows 7 64bit OS and 4GB RAM. Onboard sound courtesy of Realtec. I installed SPE 8.5 and unpacked a bun file of a project that I have been working on for my band. It sounded like crap. (we aren't very good musicians but the sounds that I recorded on my old WIN XP machine sounded OK) The playback sounded like I was listening to the music on an old AM radio, sitting in a Volkswager Beetle with a bad set o' plug wires. Continuous popping through out the playback, regardless of the number of tracks enabled. I checked the settings and discovered that Realtec was not running an ASIO driver. I then installed ASIO for All and the sound smoothed out. It sounded just fine. I was quite happy. Then I deceided to try recording a new track into the piece so I went to insert my firewire card from my old laptop and, it was too wide. I went out and got a SIIG FireWire ExpressCard and plugged it in. Win 7 said that all was well. I installed the driver for my daughter's ProFire 2626 interface and rebooted with the card and interface all plugged in and it looked OK from the ProFire control panel. I connected a Kaossilator and started it looping, then opened Sonar and tried to find the input that I could see quite clearly in the M-Audio ProFire application. There was no love to be found. I could only see odd numbered inputs and none of them showed any activity in the level meter. I then thought to try to input a MIDI track. I installed the Win7 64bit driver for my Edirol PCR-300 keyboard and again no love. only the BSOD Has anyone out there ever tried using a rig like this? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Papa Homer Toshiba A665 Laptop SIIG FireWire Express Card M-Audio ProFire 2626 Audio Interface Roland Edirol PCR-300 Midi Keyboard PS, Propellerheads Reason works just fine with the same Keyboard and ASIO4All driver.
Did you try rerunning Sonar's audio device profiler? It will switch back to WDM from ASIO but it may find the new devices...? -- Sue Morton "PapaHomer" wrote: > I connected a Kaossilator and started it looping, then opened Sonar > and tried to find the input that I could see quite clearly in the > M-Audio ProFire application. > There was no love to be found. You have shared much knowledge here in past posts and I have always enjoyed reading them. I did try these things you suggest before giving up for the night. No new devices were found. After a few hours of sleep I installed Propellerheads Record 1.0 and saw something interesting. I was able to select the M-Audio ASIO driver in the Audio preferences window and it returned a nice green checkmark, indicating success. Before I could return to the main program window, however, an error message popped up stating that the driver had stopped, (almost as if it was interrupted from working?????) That got me thinking. even though I am a relative 64bit neophyte, I hoped that the new Windows7 shares in the IBM legacy of system architecture. I checked IRQ assignments and found that the ExpressCard was sharing and interrupt with something else but could not modify the setting of the ExpressCard. I will try tonight to see if I can reassign or disable the conflicting device and report the results here. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Papa Homer
Thank you for your kind words I'm glad to hear I've been of some value here. Unfortunately I haven't used Sonar much in the last couple of years so I'm way behind the curve when it comes to helping out on Sonar issues these days. And I've not ever tried to run it from 64-bit W7 (laptop or no). So others here are more suited to helping you, if they have any ideas about this. My dual-boot systems are still XP Pro 32-bit to W7 Pro 32-bit, exactly because of driver support problems for some of my hardware. It sounds to me like you are on the right, if frustrating, track... keep looking into drivers specifically for 64-bit W7 if possible. That may sus out the entire issue if you can get good ones that work. Also, Sonar creates a file AUD.INI (location varies with OS and preferences, search for it). This contains wave profiler data and other info. It is safe to shut Sonar down, rename this file, then launch Sonar again and it will go through the profile automatically as well as create this file again with default values. Sometimes this works better than just running the profiler again, so worth a try IMO. You can always delete the new file that was created and rename the old one back into place, as it contains some preference settings as well. There is a file for midi as well, it doesn't have to do with audio device discovery, but it does have parameters that govern midi interactions. Sorry, I don't have Sonar installed right now and the name of this file escapes me... :-/ I hope someone else can chime in on this for you. Good luck, I hope you get it sorted soon. -- Sue Morton "Papa Homer" <> wrote in message news:i4cf9s$um7$... > > "Sue Morton" <> wrote in message > news:i4c366$ec3$-september.org... >> Did you try rerunning Sonar's audio device profiler? Have you totally gone to the dark side Sue? <EvilGrin> Is the file in question, TTSSEQ.INI ? Although I exclusively use Reaper for new projects, I still have five versions of Sonar still installed on my machine. -- Remove YourHeadFromYourAss to Reply by email ________ __ / ____/ /__ ____ ____ / /_ ____ / / __/ / _ \/ __ \/ __ \/ __ \/ __ \ / /_/ / / __/ / / / / / / /_/ / /_/ / \____/_/\___/_/ /_/_/ /_/_.___/\____/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- Glennbo http://www.soundclick.com/glennbo Non-Linear Sound http://www.soundclick.com/jambits Hear My Music http://www.soundclick.com/ThePseudonyms
Re: New Win 7 64bit Notebook for Papa Homer - It Works NOW!!! As usual, I was overthinking the situation. I looked into the shared IRQ issue and found that I could disable the PCI Express Root Port 3 that was the other item using the same IRQ as the FireWire ExpressCard but they both dissappeared. That didn't help. I took another look at the M-Audio contrrol panel and found that the portion of the Routing tab that allowed the ports to be turned on and off was pulsating between "available" and "grayed out". Like the driver was being toggled off and on. Very strange indeed! I continued poking around and came across a troubleshooting wizard that resulted in testing Sonar in Vista Compatibility Mode. It worked as soon as I tried it. Such a simple fix, I should have tried it first. (actually I did try running in Win-XP SP3 mode but it did no good, so I gave up before trying the other options) Vista mode made Propellerheads' Record work too. Amazing. Off to bed now, I have 33 Win7 PCs to configure and ship out from work tomorrow (should finish at least two or three...) As well as all the calls from the users that have received their new machines already and can't figure out how to get to their E-mail...
Thanks yes! That's the filename I couldn't recall. No, not off to the "dark side", Reaper's midi support is still not usable for me. Sadly that's not the reason though. I haven't done music work most of this year due to my employer's schedule. I've been working heavy overtime since March (lowest week is 68 hours and I've hit my record of 83 hours in a week, several times). We're understaffed 4 positions and there's a hiring freeze for 2010 :-( -- Sue Morton "Glennbo" <> wrote in message news:Xns9DD6DEA77DC83BrownShoesDontMakeIt@85.214.73.210... > Have you totally gone to the dark side Sue? <EvilGrin> > > Is the file in question, TTSSEQ.INI ? > > Although I exclusively use Reaper for new projects, I still > have five versions of Sonar still installed on my machine.

Ha ha. Actually they're already saying we need more people but unless the freeze is lifted by Corporate there will be no new warm bodies. Or even cold ones :-/ And yes I do mind all the overtime. Re: New Win 7 64bit Notebook for Papa Homer - It Works NOW!!! It's actually not directly on the driver, but on the driver installation program.
