It should be said the Gentoo is NOT a normal-end-user distro; you really need to know a lot about Linux to use it. This problem would only have affected people using Gentoo and building packages from source code. This is not something that would affect newbies running Ubuntu or Mint. The key point is this: "This backdoor allows a person to execute ANY command with the privileges of the user running the ircd." Linux users don't get to do much with their regular privileges; you have to escalate using sudo or su to do anything really damaging to the system. The fix was done within a day or two of the problem being discovered.
