I've always had a few complaints about Window's (XP) Search function. Things
    I wished it did:
    1) Save "favorite" searches, particularly the "Look in" part, with or
without the named and containing parameters
    2) Allow multiple named, containing, and "Look in" (or any combination) in a
    single search.

A few others but those are the biggies. Of course, I'd like a freebie. Not
that I'm cheap. I've purchased my share of shareware or "full" versions of
free "Lite" programs (Roboform, Foxit Reader, and many others). I've felt
burned a couple of times too. Like no more than 3-4 months ago (from memory)
I purchased the Pro-Pack for Foxit that included Comment Tools (let's you
markup, use "typewriter", draw, measure, attach files), a Form Filler (very
cool), and other advanced editing tools. I haven't done the upgrade to v4.0
but apparently all that (that was $40) is now included free in 4.0. And of
course, who wants to spend money when they don't have to?

So I found Agent Ransack (which I'd tried years ago) but is now v "2010" and
it has every thing I've wanted and complex (complex expressions for
searching, etc.). The only thing missing I want (that's in the paid version)
is it won't search inside ZIP files. That can be very big depending on your
    search needs.

Does anyone know of a freeware search utility that will do most of what
Ransack does plus ZIP files? I tried the new Windows Search 4.0 (I think
that's it) and hated it so much I immediately rolled back. I don't even
remember what I hated about it now but I'm pretty sure it hadn't added any
of the things I wanted that were missing from the old Search.

I imagine Sue will have an answer or two. And I'll even take a look at any
commercial program recommendations if they're pretty exceptional and are
    inexpensive.

I miss hanging out here so much but my health has gotten good enough on the
one hand that I have lots of other stuff that needs doing (like catching up
on 20 years of "need-to-do" stuff that piled up in that time). And on the
other if it's not gotten worse I've gotten older (and "well" enough) to look
into and take care a lot of the things a paraplegic should do health-wise
all the time (involving both healing and prevention and regular check-up of
all the systems that no longer work as intended) but I just wasn't able to
before, even some of the basic, serious stuff. Some days literally from the
time I wake up until I close my eyes (and thanks to complex sleep apnea made
even worse by paralysis it doesn't end then and literally goes on all night
until the next morning...Sue can feel my pain!!!..lol) practically every
minute of my time is taken up just taking care of my body and getting it to
do the things it no longer does on it's on, etc. Which is why I have to go
right now and shouldn't even have typed this much! But I wanted you guys to
know I miss you, think of you, and listen to your songs when I can.

Sorry Ricky here's a time when I don't have a good answer for you!

I use both Everything (as mentioned by Barking) which only searches for
filenames, and does use an index but it's tiny and very fast. I also
use Filelocator Pro (the pay-for version of Agent Ransack as you noted).
These two have been my search tools of choice for years.

Thanks to you both. I may bite the bullet and get Filelocator Pro.
