Mainly on material compressed at 128. I do not think that it's just my ears, as other people I know have mentioned it. A point to a good article would be as good as a detailed explanation.

Because mp3 is a highly compressed format and, although quality is surprisingly good, it isn't THAT good. Use a higher rate or, if you want to hear exactly what you recorded, use wav instead of compressing to MP3. CubaseFAQ page: http://www.laurencepayne.co.uk/CubaseFAQ.htm

I was hoping to find out what happens - something like "the lower the bitrate, the less able the algorithm is to capture higher frequencies accurately because..." (I just made that up, BTW.) To me it sounds a lot like what happens when you use a bit reduction or waveshaping plug-in. Most folks just call it distortion, but inquiring minds got to know.
Re: OT: Why do I hear nasty audio artifacts in the high frequencies on .mp3 files? (the PHYSICS of it all) I won't use anything but 320kbps on MP3's. Even those still sound like crap compared to the original wav or aif files. I don't know what the physics of it are or anything but I wish somebody would come up with an improvement over MP3 files. My heart just sinks when I finish a song in Cubase with all the dynamics on instruments like Omnisphere and Trillium, then you listen to the result after you've mastered it with T-Racks and converted it down to MP3.
