Play RD-800 Sounds from External Device via MIDI

This should be easy, but I have racked my brains to they are about fried.

I want to be able to play the internal sounds of my RD-800 from an external MIDI controller/sequencer while playing the RD-800 itself (other patches). Supposedly, the board is 16 part multi timbral but I cannot for the life of me discover how to set the receive channel on the RD-800 or direct data from the external MIDI device to the RD-800 to play the internal sounds.

Any help would be appreciated. I have been humbled by this board and this complexity that should be easy.
