I'm having a strange, and, at least at the moment, showstopping problem with
one project under SONAR 7.0.1. I believe, from looking at version stamp
information in the original SONAR project, that that the project I'm trying
to remix was created in SONAR 3.1.1 (version seems to be 12.1.1.264).

I can read the project into SONAR 7.0.1 just fine. It plays back if I play
    it at that point.

Next I try insertin a softsynth, including its track folder, MIDI track, and
first audio output track. From that point on, I can't get any playback
unless I delete the softsynth from the rack.

The softsynth I was initially trying was Spectrasonics Trilogy, as I want
to upgrade the sounds on the bass part. However, I also tried TTS-1,
thinking maybe it was specific to Trilogy, and I get the same result.

Also, I tried saving a version of the file after having done a bunch of
other troubleshooting, like disabling other plug-ins and tracks, just to try
and get it down to lowest common denominator, leaving just a track with
Trilogy in there as active with everything else archived and/or disabled.
The idea was to try closing and reloading the project or even closing SONAR
then starting it again and reloading the project, as I have had a few flaky
cases where that resolves an impasse in getting sound. But when I reloaded
the project I'd saved, even after rebooting my system, I get a SONAR poof
(i.e. SONAR disappears with no crash message or Watson dump) consistently
(or at least the 2 out of 2 times I tried it). And I do have to reboot
after the poof because SONAR's process is left hanging even if the
application doesn't show up in the application part of the Windows XP task
    manager.

Have any other SONAR 7 users seen this? If so, any workarounds you've come
up with? At the moment I'm dead in the water on trying to do anything on
this project since it is mainly some softsynth replacement I want to try.
About the only thing I can think of at the moment (and I haven't tried it
yet) is seeing if I can use SONAR 5 or 6 to try to at least get past the
impasse, then hope it will load in SONAR 7 after that. (It's conceivable I
could do the remixing I want to do in SONAR 6, but definitely not in SONAR 5
since I also want to use AudioSnap to tweak the timing of multiple audio
loops to sound more like they were played together.)

Replying to my own message with a slight update:

If I go into SONAR 6.2.1 and try to do the same thing, the project still
plays after the synth insert. If I then save that file, then go back to
SONAR 7.0.1 to try to work on the file, the file won't play again. There
definitely seems to be something messed up in this area on the SONAR 7
    front.

And yet another reply to myself with yet another update, and what seems
to have been a successful workaround, though I could have sworned I'd tried
    something like this already:

Going back to SONAR 7.0.1, I loaded the project at the state before I wanted
to insert Trilogy again and inserted it. As before, playback wouldn't work.

I connected an instance of KOMPAKT in the Synth Rack (it was the first
softsynth in there, and was being used multitimbrally on two different
parts, but those parts had been rendered in the pre-Freeze "Bounce to
Tracks"style, where there was a separate audio track for the rendered
result, the softsynth audio and MIDI tracks were frozen, and I'd
disconnected the synth in the rack to free up its memory). I tried again
    playing, and still no go.

Next I disconnected KOMPAKT and tried again. Still no go.

Next I disconnected Trilogy. As I'd expected, it would play.

Now I reconnected Trilogy. This time it would play!!!

Okay, I didn't know whether it was something with the KOMPAKT interaction or
what, so I decided to exit the project without saving it and load it again
from the point before inserting Trilogy the first time. (I didn't shut
    SONAR down in between.)

I loaded the project, it played as expected.

I inserted Trilogy. The project still played!!!! No needing to
disconnect/reconnect KOMPAKT or Trilogy this time!!!

Obviously something must have gotten funked up in SONAR's internal state
that the playing around I did in the first project cleared and left cleared
once it was cleared. VERY strange. But at least now I have been able to
save the project in a state where it is playing with Trilogy. And I'm
guessing additional softsynth insertions into that project are likely to be
okay, too, as I generally don't have problems inserting softsynths, Trilogy
or otherwise, into SONAR 7 projects.

I had something like that happen too. What I did was open in S5 or S4.
Ignored the message about the new stuff. Inserted the plugin/softsynth in
4/5 then went back to 7 and it worked. I wish I could remember which it
was. I do remember opening in 6 and resaving did no good. I seem to
remember it was EZDrummer inserted after a Kontakt. And the song had
originated in an older version of sonar like yours.

Open in 7 ... save in 7 close everything ... reopen newly saved version .... try that?

Hmmm, I wonder if NI products may be the common denominator. I know I've
also seen problems in SONAR 6 with getting sound out in some cases with
KONTAKT (2?). Whatever it was, though, it is definitely very strange.

The only problem I've had with 7 and I'm not 100% sure it's happened
in 7.0.1 is with things not starting properly. Sometimes I have to
stop and start again. I don't think I'm working on anything that
doesn't have at least two instances of Kontakt 2 at the moment.

I have been using the Chris Hein Warwick Bass library lately with the
AmpegSVX plugin or my Ibanez with the same plugin. I may start
something with Trilogy but don't usually leave it. It seems to require
too much LF taming for me. ( I do love the Acoustics just when playing
for joy along with some lovely insane break beats. I haven't recorded
any of that. It's how I unwind and warm up my chops. I guess DnB is a
guilty pleasure for me. I love it.)

This is what happens when people like us take a zillion ingredients and
expect the results to tast like Wolfgang Puck made it. <g>

All kidding aside, computers are flaky. What works on one system crashes
another. It took me months to resolve a problem that ended up being a bad
    mobo....or whatever you call it.

Good luck with your soup Sue!

But that's just it, Poly -- I run an average of 10 midi tracks with simple
synths like TTS-1, no outboard equipment except for mics and preamps, and
darn few (if any) plugins, and only the ones that came with Sonar. No
rewire, no Kompact, Kontakt, etc. Just mix to stereo wav and export. Pretty
    dang simple. You'd think that much could be stable? {sigh}

Wow. I had no idea you were having that much trouble. My sympathy.
If you have that much instability with so little going on, could it possibly
be the computer and not Sonar?

Yeah, I'd mentioned that the first time, I think. That version is the one
that made SONAR (7.0.1) go poof! :-( In any event, I did ultimately get it
working through some seemingly random connecting/disconnecting of softsynths
in the synth rack voodoo. ;-)

Nope, tried on all different computers... different hardware, all XP Pro

I meant the current version 7.0.1 I was just shorthanding.
The real thought was that once saving in the V7.0.1 format and reopening ...

That's what I thought you meant, and that's the thought I was replying to.
That is, I did try saving in 7.0.1 format and reopening, and that revised
version of the file is what made SONAR poof. That has helped in some
scenarios in the past, but not this particular one. Only the synth
disconnecting/reconnecting "voodoo" (as in "I'm not 100% sure what I did,
but it worked that time, whereas I thought I'd don't something similar
before that didn't work") ultimately got it working.

Have you tried using different notes? ;)

We let a guy sit in live with us once who turned out to be a metal head.
