Wow. I wasn't even considering upgrading but this might be the most
important upgrade since Sonar has been in existence.

The things I'm most excited about...

    * Prosoniq MPEX time scaling

    * Track Folders with the ability to edit the Track Folder Composite
    Clip

    * Enhanced comping and editing features: clip muting, partial-clip

How does one configure a studio to mix in surround? I would assume that
there is a whole new monitor setup, with 5, or 7 different components? IOW,
I currently have M-Audio Delta 66 / Omni Studio, and two sets of monitors,
one powered, one amp driven. How would I set up to mix in surround?

    Regards,

    Chris Forsyth

Actually, this probably deserves another thread altogether - so I will start

I was hoping for gapless editing, at least for midi. The ability to set up a
loop and add, record and edit
tracks without ever stopping playback is a huge creative advantage. Logic
    has had this for years.

You would need to utilize 5 outputs on the 66 ( 1/2 ,3/4 and the SPdif). Some 5.1 encoders
will take the SPdif out and synthezie it to 5.1...I don't recommend that.
You would set Sonar up with the proper sends and returns for 5.1 ( Sonar 4 apparently will do
this from the get-go...Nuendo does it right now).
You would need an a surround speaker system.
If you want a final product, you need a 5.1 encoding software.
You need a sense of adventure and a patient family to listen to you 5.1 mixes.<G>
A great resource on the web is: http://www.5dot1.com

In the beginning it looks complicated, and in reality it is kind of, but it is mostly fun if you
ask me. Speakers can be had inexpesively...so long as you are not dependent on them as your mix
check speakers. Logitech (Z-680's) are good and they are the same speakers as the Alesis
ProActive 5.1 speakers, for less money. They are not great...but then they are not bad either.
But like most speaker choices you have to pay to play.

I was also hoping for enhanced control surface support. What would make
my Mackie control a lot more convenient and usable is if it displayed
only the tracks that were visible on the track view. That way, there
would be a 1:1 correspondence between what I saw on the screen and what I
    saw on my control surface.

Another thing that would be nice would be to extend the track manager so
that you could set up save views of your project. I typically work with
projects that have 50 to 100+ tracks and it would be really nice to group
the tracks into views where you only saw what you were interested in
    working on.

None the less, I think the bakers have made some good moves forward by
the looks of the new feature list.

When you edit something while playing back, playback doesn't get
    interrupted.
Try recording some midi, loop it and start editing the midi events in piano
roll (while the loop is playing) and
you will see what I'm talking about.

You never loop a section to do edits?

You should try it, beats having to start, stop, edit, go back, start,
listen, stop, go back, start, stop, edit, go back, start, listen, stop, go
back, start, stop, edit, go back, start, listen, stop, go back, start, stop,

    back.........

I believe this is one of the main reasons a lot of people are not using
SONAR, and the reason I'm seriously considering switching to Nuendo, buggy
    or not.

Nope. I'll loop a section to play along with until I can play the part the
way I want it. Then I record the part, played in real time the way you
hear it. If the take isn't good, I record it again until I'm satisfied,
then I'm done with that section.

I patch effects in while playing back, which can cause a fraction of a
second's worth of gapping, but even that doesn't bother me at all. If I
were using my old reel-to-reel and physically patched an effect with
cables, there would be more of a gap than there is in Sonar, and I don't
care if BrandX has zero gapping, because gapping ain't an issue for me.

I never did edits of notes when I was working with tape, and I still don't
do edits of notes using Sonar, so real time modifying of the notes in a
track that's already recorded isn't an issue for me.

Jeez, I guess I'm lucky. I get my edits right the first or second

Lets say you're building an 8 bar groove from scratch in piano roll, or
    building
a 2 bar drum fill or something like that......

I would not use the piano roll to build an 8 bar groove. I would learn
to play the 8 bars on my midi keyboard, then press record in Sonar and
    record the part.

    > or building a 2 bar drum fill or something like that......

I would play the part on my V-Drums, and hit record.

I'm curious as to what your global midi settings are, I'm doing this right
now and I'm getting no interruptions. My midi playback is set to 1024 and
Number of Buffers is set to 128.
