I just picked up a used Prophet 2000 for $75.00, in remarkable shape. I just located a manual for it in PDF form, so I have some reading to do, and I have another vintage instrument to restore and play with. I was told by the seller the drive had "crashed", but it's only a floppy drive. Easy to replace, I would assume, but is this particular floppy drive different than your common (almost obsolete anymore) PC floppy drive you can buy for under $15.00 at your local PC parts store? I see a replacement for the Prophet 2000 offered for $69.00, so I'm wondering why I can't replace it with your common floppy drive? Given that's all that is wrong with it, of course. Does anyone know this synth very well, to get me going? I'll dig up a floppy disk somewhere (I haven't used a floppy disk in years), and see if I can format it and/or write to it with the Prophet. That will verify if the floppy is indeed dead or not. I switched the keyboard on, ran an output over to an amp, and I'm finding that I can get sounds out of it, but it doesn't respond to EVERY key stroke, only occasional keystrokes. Like, I can hit it four or five times, and only one will sound a note out of those four or five attempts. What could that be? If restoration fails, I'll use the midi ports to trigger something else. It's still a nice unit, though. Can anyone throw any repair advice my way, or suggest things to check first? Can the system be "reset" to default settings? Parts easily available? Thanks!
