Hi all, my old song "Separate Soul" has gotten the DJ "Shanek" remix
treatment. Please give a listen. Thanks!

    Russ,

Great song! If it was mine though, I'd lose some of the reverb. I'd also get the drums and bass to
sync up and become much more aggressive to "push" things along - especially in the verses.

    That's only my £0.02 (worth about $0.03) though... ;-)

I agree. More bass and drums would give it more drive. I like the
    orchestral chimes toward the end.

Thanks, I'll be passing a link to this to Shanek so he can check out any
comments. I basically gave him my raw tracks and he used or replaced
them as he saw fit. I did do a new lead vocal take at his request. I
made some suggestions that he incorporated but I wanted him to do his
take on the song. For those interested, he used Reaper.

My 2004 version with the 2010 vocal (I need to revisit this now):

The percussion in that section is a nice addition. BTW, he used Reaper
after I suggested it-he was using Audition.

I my opinion he didn't do you a lot of favours in reworking that song.
In your original there is a very nice presence to the sound. In the
reworked version that presense has gone, the sparkle of the guitar has
gone and in its place is a muddy and imprecise sound field. You could
probably restore some of the sparkle by judicious use of harmonic
exciters. The horns comping is a bit cliched and could be timed better
to pulse of the piece. There is also what sounds like an FM slap bass
in places, its timing could also be done better as could its melodic
movement, in order drive the song along.

I hope you don't take offense at these remarks. The song itself is very good.

Very cool. I love orchestral chimes. I actually got to play those when I
was in orchestral band in school. You hit those with rawhide hammers. ;)

My own twin sense: I think the vocals are a bit forward and that masks
the instruments a bit. Shanek played bass guitar, did the backup vocals,
the drum track and the horns-I doubt if there's any FM bass. I really
tried to let him make his own version of the song with a few suggestions
    here and there.

    > I hope you don't take offense at these remarks. The song itself is

Well, posting it here means that tomatoes may be hurled...I trust you lot
to give an honest evaluation and suggestions for improvement. I gave
Shanek the google groups for this thread so he can check out any
comments-I don't know if he currently has usenet access.

Thanks for the kind words about the song itself-it's a personal favorite.
I have to thank Shanek for getting me to redo the lead vocal. I've been
going to karaoke a lot in the past couple of years and my vocal is more
confident than back in 2004, so it's not doubled or drenched in reverb
    like the old 2004 version.

Geez, Ted, can you please lay off the Islamobashing in a thread for song
comments? The guy's name is Shane and his last name starts with K, so I
call him DJ "Shanek", no religion or ethnicity implied or involved.
Comment on the song if you please, but leave the political crap in the

Apologies to the Groups (but NOT YOU WHO)

To my cakewalk.* friends, excluding the newly plonked one, my apologies for
the previous post. I usually keep this kind of reaction to myself but this
kind of hate cannot, must not go unchallenged. For me, those that hate and
