Here's a new one fresh from SONAR 8.5.3 x64: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=9375165 The song is called "There's a Chair", and I wrote it earlier this year with Al Lowry who also plays in the worship band at The Gate in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA. Brand new toy on this one is the Music City USA SDX from Toontrack, which I used to replace the Nashville EZX I'd previously been using on the song. It felt like a subtle, but noticeable improvement, and that was just using one of their presets (a Chuck Ainley Brush Ballad preset). Other toys making an appearance are mostly some of my standard fare, including Trilogy on bass, RealGuitar 2 on acoustic guitars, Chris Hein Guitars through Guitar Rig 3 on lead guitar, Garritan Steinway Basic on piano, KONTAKT 3 (standard library) on accordion, and Quantum Leap RA on mandolin. Any constructive feedback on the mix would be welcome. Hey Rick, This sounds really good. Best vocals from you I can remember from a sonic perspective (and performance as well). Only problem for me is the drums. Sounds like drummer is struggling to keep up with the band. Also, the choice of kit and reverb may not be the best for this style of music. Thanks for the feedback, Neil. A couple other people also mentioned "drummer" issues. I'm going to have to take a closer look/listen. I'm curious on the reverb comment. First, were you talking specifically about the drums, or overall? Secondly, do you have any specific thoughts on what you feel might be appropriate (from memory, I believe I used PerfectSpace with an impulse that was either for a church or a blues club as my room reverb -- I use the blues club one frequently, but might have gone with a church on this particular one due to the nature of the song and that I was originally recording it partly as a demo to help the worship team at the church where I play keys learn it -- I wouldn't have used anything separate on the drums, but they would have a blend of room mics in there along with a lesser send of drums to the room reverb compared to other instruments). I listened again and I guess my problem isn't with reverb (I was initially referring to drum reverb) but with the drum choices themselves, particularly the snare. Sounds like a hard rock snare on a Peter, Paul & Mary song. Try a brush hit snare or side stick and see what happens. Neil R "Rick Paul" <> wrote in message news:... > Thanks for the feedback, Neil. Thanks for the clarification, Neil. Actually, though, it is brush hits. Not sure why it sounds otherwise. I'll have a closer listen to when I revisit the mix (don't have my studio monitors powered up at this point). Perhaps it's got some heavy compression settings on it or something -- I just used a preset for a brush ballad, and didn't really pay attention to details. Hi Neil, If you have the time and inclination, I'd be very interested to hear whether you think my new mix resolves the "drummer" sync issues. I've just uploaded it over the old one at: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=9375165 I also made a few other minor mix changes, but the main focus was trying to address the sync issues, and that's an area where I'm always concerned it's easy enough to make things worse instead of better. I also looked, or more succinctly listened, to the drum kit sound thing you mentioned, but on all the speakers I listen through it seems pretty evident it is a brushed kit. I might add, though, that I'm not going for a really laid back folk sound (you'd mentioned Peter, Paul & Mary), either. While it starts out somewhere in the bluegrass/Italian folk song realm in some senses, it also has a piano throughout, and builds energy as it goes along up to the point where the guitar solo is where my basic concept was closer to a Tom Petty-type feel (though maybe the Byrds would be a bit closer). In that sense, I am intentionally trying to have it build to rocking out a bit, despite the brushes kit, and I intentionally made the hits harder as the build progressed (and came back down at the end where it mellows out again). Thanks again for your earlier feedback. That's great Rick! No issues with the drums anymore. Sounds like you took them back a bit which I think is right for this tune. My only minor suggestion is to raise the vol of the 2 short lead gtr lines towards the end and let them stand out a bit more as if they were leade vocals. That's a minor thing though. Besides that I'd say you were done! Very nice song. Good message and mix. Sorry I missed all the remix fun Sounds great. I like your voice better on this song than most mixes I have heard you do. Now if cake just had those channel strip presets like most other daws have, no, no I'm getting off the subject sorry Guess you could use a track template. Thanks, Max. It's interesting (to me anyway) that a number of people have commented positively on the voice on this one. I don't think I'm doing anything all that differently here than in other recent recordings, and the song is actually a bit harder for me to sing than most because a fair portion of it lies low in my range, though part of it goes somewhat up there, too. FWIW, lead vocal chain is the T-RackS Vintage Compressor 670 (Fairchild emulation), T-RackS Prog EQ1A (Pultec emulation), Waves RDeEsser, then PSP VintageWarmer2 (for track to tape emulation). BGV chain is a preset in Cakewalk's VX-64 VocalStrip. One thing I have been doing somewhat differently in my last few recordings is not taking a direct feed from the vocal delay (Lexicon PSP 42) into the main mix, but rather sending it to the vocal reverb (Lexicon Pantheon) instead. I might not do that for every type of song, but I like the way things blend better that way on most ballad-type songs I've done lately. Another thing is that I've been learning how to use some of the new features of AutoTune Evo (versus AutoTune 4) in ways that make it a lot quicker for me to do vocal tuning and, I think, might also end up delivering more natural results than the pure graphical tuning I'd been doing most of the time before. Now I only do the manual graphic stuff if using their graphic notes and the control related to how fast it gets to pitch is not getting me what I want in specific areas. In particular, the notes make it a lot faster to tell it what I think the notes should have been, and I think the dial setting the dial control seems to be able to preserve more naturalness in how things get there, for example making it easier to keep the good aspects of natural vibrato or note bends while still reigning in pitch issues. I seem to have done a worse job than usual on my pitch control on this song, too, I think due to a combination of where the song sits and not having warmed up sufficiently before doing my tracking.
