Hi, I am currently using a Soundblaster Audigy 2ZS, and getting audio pops even with the latest drivers. I run a Mackie Mixer into my soundcard and out to my amp + monitors. It's primarily used for jamming with friends, but I would also like to get quality recordings too. I need a recommendation for a good sound card. It only needs stereo in/ out. Thanks in advance, John

Having seen how much Vista sucks up clock cycles over XP, I don't mess with it. -- Remove YourHeadFromYourAss to Reply by email ________ ____ / ____/ /__ ____ ____ / __ )____ / / __/ / _ \/ __ \/ __ \/ __ / __ \ / /_/ / / __/ / / / / / / /_/ / /_/ / \____/_/\___/_/ /_/_/ /_/_____/\____/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- Glennbo http://www.soundclick.com/glennbo Non-Linear Sound http://www.soundclick.com/jambits Hear My Music http://www.soundclick.com/ThePseudonyms
I have an M-Audio Audiophile 192 in one of my machines. More ins/outs than you need but an awesome card. http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Audiophile192-main.html however I don't see that it has drivers for Vista... http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Audiophile2496-main.html is the Audiophile 2496, I've never used one but a lot of people on this group have. Unfortunately no mention of Vista here either... Another card I have is the Echo Audio Mia Midi, this is a really great little card http://www.echoaudio.com/Products/PCI/MiaMIDI/specs.php and easy on the budget, but again I don't see Vista mentioned... If you do any MIDI work, keep in mind your Soundblaster Audigy uses hardware MIDI synths. Any pro or "pro-sumer" card will not have onboard hardware synths, you'll use software synths so a "beefier" machine is generally required. If all you need is audio this is not much of a concern. Also, the Echo Audio Mia (without Midi) is a discontinued card but is the same card as the above, sans Midi. IF you can find it for sale, it is usually pretty dang cheap. A good little card if you can find one. Who makes pro or "pro-sumer" cards for home use, with decent latency, that play nice with Vista? -- Sue Morton riplead wrote: > Hi, > > I am currently using a Soundblaster Audigy 2ZS, and getting audio pops > even with the latest drivers. > > I run a Mackie Mixer into my soundcard and out to my amp + monitors. > It's primarily used for jamming with friends, but I would also like to > get quality recordings too. > > I need a recommendation for a good sound card. You need to make sure your soundcard settings (as well as some things in Windows) are optimized first. It could be you would end up with the same problems even with a new soundcard. I would get these worked out first.

I would get these worked out first. I know first hand that Vista sucks up a *lot* more clock cycles than XP does, and it's index service is a real pig. On my dual boot P4 2.4Ghz machine you can literally see the difference doing simple stuff like scrolling a web page. In XP it's smooth, and in Vista it's jerk jerk jerk. -- Remove YourHeadFromYourAss to Reply by email ________ ____ / ____/ /__ ____ ____ / __ )____ / / __/ / _ \/ __ \/ __ \/ __ / __ \ / /_/ / / __/ / / / / / / /_/ / /_/ / \____/_/\___/_/ /_/_/ /_/_____/\____/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- Glennbo http://www.soundclick.com/glennbo Non-Linear Sound http://www.soundclick.com/jambits Hear My Music http://www.soundclick.com/ThePseudonyms

They have already posted how bad Vista is, but if you are still interested, Echo has good Vista drivers, and I have heard that Edirol has good Vista drivers. My AP2496 card seems to still be working just fine. I tried it with every audio program I have installed an had no problem with any of them. I installed it before Vista updated to SP1. I also have an AP2496 card in my WinXP home computer. The driver listed for it and the one I'm using for WinXP is 5.10.005057. BTW, my Vista computer is an ACER dual core 64 with 4 gigs matched ram. The Compaq is my WinXP computer. It is a P4 3.06 with 2 gigs matched ram.

I wonder how many people will still be using XP by then. MS has gotten worse since Balmer took over. It might be a crap shoot that Windows 7 will be any better than Vista.
I'm now happy again with my PreSonus FireBox. Tech support at PreSonus was great help. The week of hell I went through with it makes me hesitate to recommend it though. Pity: It worked well out of the box (before I upgraded the drivers, which upgraded the firmware, which screwed up the box), it's preamps don't sound too shabby, it's relatively stable and has nice low latency. I'd definitely solicit other experiences before I bought one. It's currently working well for me again. My Presonus 1394 seems to lock at 4ms but I've never had a pop or click come out of it. Id' definitely buy another one if I needed to.
I'm running at 3.0 ms. The machine is a Dell laptop with a 2.13 GHz Centrino, 2 GB of RAM and a 160 GB Seagate HD (5400 RPM). I can't get crazy with it, but I use that as a way to keep me from getting too fancy with production, as I'm trying to focus more on learning more about how music fits together than on doing songs. Maybe if I start working on voice leading the feature will turn into a limitation. I'd love to know how other Sonar users are getting along with the FireBox. My one experience with upgrading the drivers makes me think it's going to be widely dissed and it concerns me about buying PreSonus in the future. That being said, this one is doing everything I want it to do for me and I'm very happy with it. KO kitekrazy wrote: > Kraig Olmstead wrote: >> I'm now happy again with my PreSonus FireBox.
