Anyone kinow of relaible sites for free *.sfz files?

    Pity I didn't get to http://www.hammersound.net/
    a few years ago.

There's still some good stuff (e.g. Roland Supersax, strings etc.)

But it's a long way from it's glory days (e.g it still advertises 210 piano
fonts, but in reality there's only about 20).

Hammersound was the best site for it, but it's been dead for years. You
can also try http://www.sf2midi.com/soundfonts/ but i think you'll have
to signup first. Very few sites have them these days..
The thing is, soundfonts are practically extinct these days. They used
to be popular, but were replaced with today's software samplers/romplers
wich usually offer higher quality sounds.

Google "soundfonts torrent" and you'll find quite a bit of them. Are you
    familiar with handling torrents?

    Just my luck :(

So. Soundfont has gone the way of Usenet i.e. everybody has migrated to
    proprietary forums/music.

    I like Usenet/MIDI/Soundfont because it's portable

Once you get hooked into *ONE* proprietary music system (like Korg/whatever)
you have to keep 'upping the dose' because they're your "ONLY" supplier

Anyway, thanks for http://www.sf2midi.com/soundfonts/. Already signed-up and
    made my first download

So if it's a bit tinny. Tamla Motown was MIGHTY tinny (they used *RE-USED*
audio tapes!!!!!!!!) but it still sounds good.

Google is your friend, of course, but in short: torrents are a form of
peer-to-peer file exchange that enable you to download files, not from
one particular server but bit-for-bit from several users at once.

You will need to install some client software (e.g. from here:
http://www.bittorrent.com). Let's say you are looking for a soundfonts
file. Google it and you will find several tiny files that end in
".torrent". These are merely descriptors of the actual soundfonts file.
Download such a torrent file, have it opened by your torrent client, and
it will begin to download the soundfonts (provided there are other users
online that own the soundfonts file, of course).

Use only for legal purposes, of course.

Happy to further assist you, but this is drifting offtopic. Find my mail
address at my website if you want to continue this by email.

    Have fun

    Jos.
