I was wondering whether folks here who do their own mixing are using a
subwoofer in their system? I'm using a pair of Mackie 824's as
nearfields - they sound fine to me, but my mixing is atrocious, so what
    do I know?

    Anyone?

And, if so, how do you integrate the subwoofer into the monitoring
system so that the nearfields aren't wasting energy trying to reproduce
the frequencies handled by the subwoofer? i.e., so they're not stepping
    on each other?

Same speakers here HR824s and no sub.
But ... speakers are like a perscription for glasses, Not everyone is going to get along with the same speakers.

I've got pleny of bass and it's balanced with everything else, and my mixes never got good until I got the
Mackies. They're the first and only speakers I've every really trusted.
And they're hanging here in an untreated environment but that doesn'r seem to be a problem for me.

I think the trick is to learn to hear the speakers and not the room.

I found the 824's to be so bad and inaccurate that I literally gave them
away to a friend of mine. Nothing that was mixed on them translated in any
way close to what I heard. They sound lousy at low volumes, and have nothing
to do with reality. On top of that, the leeetle tiny buttons on the back are
stupid and hard to adjust accurately. The worst speakers have ever used, and
    I've used most of them.

Just my opinion, of course :)

Yep! I use some small Yamaha nearfields and a Yamaha sub. The mixes on
those monitors translate perfectly to the car stereo, computer speakers,
and to high quality stereo speakers.

Who are you and what have you done with Ted Perlman?!?!

The REAL Ted would never have put 'YMMV' at the end of a rant . . . Give
    him back, or . . . or . . . we'll really have to start scouring the
    internets for Serge Stodolnik . . .

David Leisure as Joe Isuzu c. 1987 compulsive liar/salesman for the
    Isuzu Trooper.

When he speaks, a disclaimer also appears onscreen:

"It'll run forever on a single tank of gas" (Disclaimer: Your mileage
    may vary)
"And you can buy one with your pocket change." (Disclaimer: Provided you
have $9,999.99 in quarters and nickels.)
"If I'm lying, may lightning hit my mother." (Onscreen: "Good luck,
    Mom!")

Some of them were hilarious :)

I guess Yamaha doesn't make these any more, at least I don't see them

I would bet they are pretty flat. My little cheepie MSP3s

    http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Yamaha-MSP3-Active-2Way-Studio-MonitorEach?sku=600848

    and sub

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...p=&qp=&list=n&iht=y&usc=All Categories&ks=960

are very easy to dial up mixes that translate well on other speakers.

No, I don't have any NS10s, but my sub is the same one that both Ted and
Dave use. The MSP3s are real flat, but have no bottom. The sub fixes that
    real well.
