I'm working on series of commercials for a client. The files I recorded into
Sonar 8 a few days ago (mostly spoken word and sound fx so far) are all
playing sped up. Recorded at 44.1 - 24 bit. Sound card (Layla 24 ) is locked
at 44.1 but still it sounds like it's playing at 48. All my other Sonar
files seem to be fine. Only change to the system was upgrading from itunes 9
to10. If that caused this issue why would my other files play ok?? Any
thoughts? I would prefer not to delete itunes from my system but I will if
no noe can think of what might be causing this????

How do the wav files play outside of Sonar eg: thru Winamp or Media Player?
Can you just copy the wavs to another fresh project?

Thank for your reply Poly. They play the same way outside of Sonar now.
Yesterday they played fine inside of Sonar and had no reason to test them
outside. Copying to a fresh project doesn't help. Crazy!!!

My next guess would be check your "Default Device" settings in ( if XP ) Control > Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio
and set it to the Layla.
Also Hardware (tab) Find Layla in the list > Properties > Properties TAB > Audio Devices > + > Layla >Properties
    "Don't map through this device"

If that doesn't get it then I'd remove the Layla remove all drivers ( echo has a remover util. )
    Reboot and reinstall the Layla.
You won't loose your Saved Sessions.

    G' Luck!

Thanks Steve. I did all of that andno help. The only thing I can think of is
that some how my machine was recording at a faster speed the day of this
project and now it's back to normal speed and the files are playing like
chipmunks. I'll have to ping glennbo and ask him how to pitch down/slow down
    a file in reaper.

It's as easy as grabbing the playback rate slider and moving it down till
you are to pitch. Just like an old analog recorder. Like dis!!!

I have had this happen a few time with Layla. I really don't know how or
why it happens. Some how the clock gets shifted and the files are recorded
@48K instead of 44K. The only way I have found to fix it is to open the
files in Wavelab and change the sample rate there. Then they will open
    elsewhere ok.
If they are very important files, and you can't shift the sample rate. Let
    me know, I could help.

    Good luck.

BTW, the audio in this clip is distorted because it was being picked up by
the mic in my Logitech camera and only recorded at 8 bit 11,025Khz. I
figgered if the clip had some audio, it would illustrate the variable speed
    playback/record function better.

    Yea. I suspect the same.
Possibly check the sample rate in an Audio Editor and then compare it to the project rate?
I had a similar problem when transfering tracks from a DA-38.
Something about "resampling" vs just "changing the sample rate" ( Sound Forge lingo )

I seem to remember something like this in the very distant past (very
possibly not in a Cakewalk app at all -- possibly in N-Track Studio or
Samplitude or SAWse or something else that I was using at the time). The
basic issue was that files got tagged with the wrong sample rate, even
though they were recording at the right sample rate. The issue was the tag,
not the actual audio data. Whatever software I was using at the time (maybe
SAWse, which was the audio component of MasterTracks Pro Audio, or perhaps
some earlier version of Sound Forge or Cool Edit) had a way to edit the
tagged sample rate without changing the actual data. My ultra-vague memory
is that a program doing the recording (or maybe an audio card driver -- I
think I was using the Sonorus STUDI/O board at that time, but it's
conceivable it could have been the MOTU 2048 mkII) was set to a different
sample rate than the actual audio card, and the card was correct (thus
getting the audio data right, but the tag wrong) -- the having the program
at the wrong rate was just a "user error" in forgetting to change a rate in
the software. Once the audio files were retagged with the right rate, the
audio data and tags were in sync, and software didn't try to speed it up or
slow it down (depending on the direction) due to the erroneous tag.

At this point in time, I really don't recall actual details of what software
I was using, no less specific operational steps to do the tweaking to get
    things set right.

    Good luck.

    Rick
