I started learning the keyboard 6 months ago and have a yamaha ez 250i . Im no mean player but Ive grasped some chords and can play some songs with both hands thanks to youtube tutorials , madness it must be love , adele someone like you ,still dre - nothing too complicated .

I have a mac and like to load midi files into logic pro and play along to the riffs or bass with my keyboard connected , I have around £300 (uk and am looking for second hand) and need to upgrade but do I get a workstation or synthesiser ?

Also do I need storage like usb to input midi files directly ?

all advice is much appreciated

With a 300 GBP budget you can pretty much forget about a workstation.

In that range you could afford maybe a Casio XW-P1 or WK-7600.

A better use of your money would be a used stage synth from your local craigslist. Something like a used Korg TR or X50 or a used Yamaha MX6.

As for MIDI input, it will depend if it has a SD or Thumb Drive slot and whether or not it has some sort of built in sequencer.

Otherwise though, pretty much every keyboard built in the past 10 years has some sort of USB MIDI port allowing you to play MIDI files using your computer as a sequencer.

Great advice Gary ,just what I was looking for ,Im not educated in the different types of keyboards so this was useful .

Is it preferable to have a slot for a usb stick or does that not matter if its plugged into a computer ?

It's preferable to have some sort of storage capability on a keyboard but as I said, it's not an absolute dealbreaker as long as you can hook it up to a computer.

All of the models I listed however, posses an onboard sequencer and some form of storage connection.
