Hello. Many years ago up through my college days I played clarinet in the
college band and sax in a rock band. I have not played either in many
years. While roaming the Musicians Friend I came accross the Yamaha WX5
midi wind controller and wamo I realized that there was something I might
really be able to use in conjunction with my keyboard for midi recording.
I didn't realize such a thing existed. My question is does anyone here use
it or anything similar for their work. Is it something that can be played
like a sax, or some other wind instrument. How does it work? Is is only
suitable for studio use or can it be used for life performances. Does
anyone other than Yamaha make them. I work extensively with Sonar 4 and
lately quite a lot of my work is done with Project 5 ver 2. I use a Yamaha
P150 keyboard for recording midi tracks and I was thinking that perhaps I
might want to ad sax and flute parts to some pieces and maybe even use the
controller for non wind instrument parts playing melody lines. Any
feedback on this would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

I have been using a WX5 or WX11 for live performance for years - in
    combination with either a VL70m module, or Motif(ES) w/PLG150-VL card. It's
been a great addition, and in a lot of venues - where low volume is a
requirement - has served me better than my tenor or alto sax. There are a
couple of different fingering configurations that can be set via jumpers in
the control module of the WX5 - but in word - if you play
sax/flute/clarinet - Yes, the transition to the WX5 is relatively seamless.

Check out this group for plenty of info -

Here are a couple of my demo mp3s where I am using the WX5/VL70m combo on
the melody/lead work - just for an idea. I am also using that set-up for the
horn tracks on the first tune.

    Michael,

My band partner uses a WX5, and he is awsome on it both live and in the
studio. He was a sax player years ago too. He plays percussion parts, organ
parts, wind instrument parts, and wild synth parts on it. If you already
know how to play sax, it's going to be a natural for you. Remember that in
addition to the WX5, you also need a synth or keyboard that can be triggered
by it. There are other wind synths on the market, but I think Yamaha's is
    the best and most popular.

Thanks Beemer for the info and the music links. I agree with Glennbo-
great horn playing on those tracks. Looks like I'll be adding the WX5 to my
shortlist of gear purchases. I saw it priced at $549 at Musicians Friend-
not cheap but not too expensive either. - M.F.

Thanks Martin for the useful information. I find it very interesting that
your band partner can use it for percussion parts in addition to organ, wind
and synth parts. The fact that it can be used for instrumental parts other
than for wind instruments makes it all the more desireable for my work. I
just did a search on the internet and found that Akai makes a wind
controller that is less expensive but I couldn't find very much information
on it. It looks like the WX5 is the one for me.

    Thanks again.

    Michael,
Chech here for about the best price you'll find on the WX5.

The Yamaha wind contollers also work great for playing sound fonts with
VSampler in Sonar if you program VSampler to respond to CC#2. I use it
    frequently for this purpose.

    Beemer,

Very nice work, indeed! I was in a band (Shadowfax) for over 20 years that featured a wind synth, the Lyricon. We shared the bill many times with Spyro Gyra. Chuck Greenberg played Lyricon & was a master at it. It was a fully complete controller & analog synth. They are probably hard to find nowadays, but worth the hunt, as they are quite unique.

    Thanks, Michael.

I've never really spent too much time with the WX5/11 in combination with
anything other than the VL70m module - but of all the bread I've spent over
the years on live and studio equipment, software, etc - that $1100 bucks, or
so, that I spent way back when on those two pieces - has probably yielded
the best return of any of it.

You're really going to enjoy that controller.

Hey there Stu! Great to have you around on this board. I just wanted to say I really like Shadowfax's music. In fact I still have "Folksongs for a Nuclear Village" which I got back in '90 and I just got it out and sure enough you are there in the liner notes. Very cool! I'm going to give it a listen now and see if I can figure out which parts are played by the Lyricon. Since you refereed to them in the past tense I assume the group is no longer together. Which CD do you think is your best work? I wouldn't mind adding another one to my CD library and if it could be one recommended by you it would be great! -M.F
