Audio to midi?

I have an older Mac, 10.13, and I've been recording audio tracks from my Juno to Audacity, no problem (thanks, HappyRat). But I'd like MIDI editing capability. So two questions:

1. Can I play Juno sounds into the computer, hear them and keep them as Juno sounds, and edit them in MIDI? What software would that be for an old Mac?
2. Is there a simple audio (MP3, WAV)-to-MIDI converter out there? I've been searching without success, but the age of my computer is an issue.

I know these are very basic questions but I have absolutely no pride. 🙂

WAV to MIDI is a tough task, since the software has to distinguish each instrument and it's associated notes and chords in sequence in real time.

Wav to Mid converters do exist, but they work best with single track, single instrument streams.

As for a DAW that can actually help with this I use Logic Pro XI. It has a stream splitter built into the latest version using AI but it will only work with Apple Silicon in your Mac.

It's an expensive DAW but the bonus is that it gets a lifetime of free updates instead of Cubase and others on subscription models.

Some of this stuff you can find open source and free to download and install on Open Source repos like Github.

I don't know what else is available on the app store but most of it is pretty lame and overpriced.

I'm sure there are open source DAWs that will run on a Mac, but they may not be as slick and trouble-free as you are accustomed to.

It is exceedingly difficult to convert audio into midi (as HappyRat pointed out, only single instrument streams work decently... the only ones I've seen that *work* are actually monophonic e.g. converting a single vocal line to midi), so no simple free converters, no. You're *much* better off recording midi and audio simultaneously into your DAW

Google is your friend.

WAV to MIDI gets hundreds of answers.

The age of your Mac has zero effect as the convertors are online, simply upload and the online app does the rest.

At least that is what appears to happen so IMO it is well worth uploading the same WAV file to the various online conversion sites and see what they produce.

I recommend that you abandon the idea of audio to MIDI, it will result in more headaches than it solves.
Audacity has a MIDI function that you should explore.
Other programs do both audio and MIDI. Reaper, Logic, Cubase, on and on. Start by doing some Googling on recording MIDI. Once you get the basics down, you'll have a blast!

It sounds to me like Wackienne should record the audio and the MIDI from her performance at the same time. Then if she wants to edit the take, she can tweak the MIDI, then re-record the audio. Right?

Or, simply only record the MIDI. Then edit and tweak until perfect, then use the MIDI to generate the final audio output.

I dunno if Audacity can do that yet. What software would help? Couldn't GarageBand do it?
