Does Reaper do MIDI?

I downloaded the evaluation (free) version of Reaper Win 64-bit. It doesn't even recognize the .mid format. Do I need some type of plug-in or does MIDI capability only come with the full, paid version?

Reaper can import and export MIDI but it's a bit stupid about importing. You have to grab the file with your mouse in Explorer or whatever and drag it into the project.

I agree it's idiotic but drag and drop IIRC dates all the way back to the original Apple Lisa and the first GUI designed by Xerox Palo Alto Labs. :D

Anyway, it gets the job done :D

BTW, the Reaper evaluation version is totally uncrippled in any way and never expires.

That being said however, I still can't bring myself to trust it for my serious recordings. It lacks certain features for working with MIDI which I have found I simply cannot live without.

Truly a shame really, since it does run pretty well under Linux, but I keep falling back to my ancient Cakewalk Home Studio 9.01 which supports my hardware in a sane and stable fashion.

The only thing it lacks is VST capability but that's only because VST wasn't invented way back when it first came out.

A few newer DAWs I plan to experiment with this year are Bitwig Studio and Qtractor and maybe Tracktion.

Honestly I'd love to hear from anyone who's had any experiences with these three DAWs.

Gary ;)
