Growing deaf. My experience with Hearing Aids

Victoria. Australia,
I began to lose my hearing about 18 months ago and purchased a set of Hearing Aids. They worked very well. I could hear my wife speaking clearly once again. But to my dismay my favorite CD's sounded awful and my favorite Styles on my Yamaha SX970 sounded pathetic. I was despondent and I acted in haste and deleted all my Styles from my USB Sticks. Fortunately, I came across an article on the internet which said that the brain will be rewired after a week or so , if a person who is wearing hearing aids for the first time in their life, keeps them on . I did this and only took them off when I went to bed. I am delighted to report that it only took me seven days and my brain was re wired. Joy oh Joy!!
I recovered my Styles from my computer, loaded a USB stick and now enjoy playing my PSR 970 with or without Hearing Aids and my CD's sound great with or without Hearing Aids. Recently, someone told me that when I am playing my PSR 970 without hearing aids the listeners are probably missing out on some of the higher
frequencies but I don't think that they are correct. My life is now back to normal and I am delighted.

Hi @Yamfanie
Glad you posted your experience with the hearing aids. Most interesting.
I see you are from Australia. Which part?
Do you play on a band?
Ray
Birregurra. No, I don't play in a band now.. I did for a short time but when the others wanted to play Celtic music I dropped out because the tempo was too fast for my poor fingers on my acoustic guitar. John.

Very interesting, and glad your hearing and playing have been restored.
Thank you for sharing this.
I wonder how many members of this Forum play their keyboards whilst using Headphones., and the reason why they pop them on. Sometimes, I put mine on--- just because sometimes I think the sounds coming from my headphones sounds better than the built in speakers on my Yamaha PSR 970. Cheers, John.

I use head phones . . Sennhiesers . . Excuse me!
Not always, but often.
Two reasons why I use head phones . .
1. It is silence bliss for my wife.
2. Sound is certainly better than the psr speakers and I can turn up the volume and go into a trance of euphoria.

I use headphones when I'm composing, because I tend to compose during the wee small hours when the house is quiet and there are no distractions.

I’ve worn hearing aids for the past fifteen years. I’m okay with them on gigs, the only snag sometimes being that an auto volume control kicks in if the volume gets too much - an occasional annoyance more than anything. I spoke with the audiologist about it, but it seems there’s no way aound it, so . . .

That said, it remedies itself quickly enough, kicks in for a couple or three seconds at most. Like anything else, you live with it and I don’t find it a serious impediment. Rock on.

I generaly use headphones when playing my keyboards at home, as my other half is not 'into music'. Also, to mash up a well-known saying, I like to play for my own amazement.

Thanks for posting about your hearing aids experience. I'm still able to hear quite well, but my dad started losing his hearing in his late 70's. I'm 66. I hope that I don't lose my hearing, but if I do have to wear hearing aids at some point, it's reassuring to know that it's still possible to enjoy music whilst wearing them. It's wonderful how you mentioned that the brain can "rewire " itself after a fee day. We truly have amazing bodies.

My hearing is so sensitive I hear voices when nobody's there... ;)

But my dad and his siblings were all deaf as posts when they hit their 80's.

If there's anything at all to this genetics business I have a 50/50 chance in another decade.

Meanwhile I enjoy making my neighbours' ears bleed :D :D :D

Amazingly, my hearing is still good into my eighth decade of existence.
60's and 70's were a test of time with the likes of Black Sabbath, Cream, Hendrix, The Who and Tull of course blasting out of my 4 cubic feet, 100 watt rms speakers at high volume everyday. . .. Also up close and personal to the local rock bands every weeekend. Incuding AC/DC and Billy Thorpe. . . I survived it.
Fingers crossed I will survive another 1 or perhaps 2 decades aid free.

Thanks to all for your posts on this subject which has fascinated me since I got hearing aids about 2 years ago. I think that most people either leave them in their ears all the time during the day and take them out when they go to bed. or leave them in the drawer unused. My habits are different---because my wife has tinnitus and has the kitchen radio on at all times to block out the ringing in her ears I take mine out for short periods whilst I am in the kitchen reading the newspaper. [I am one of those people who CANNOT concentrate on the written word while the radio or TV is on in the same room.] I wonder how many of our members are like me and have to retreat to another room to read.
