Buying a keyboard plus some ie a lot, of research into music theory would help.

Plenty of threads with great links within the forum on getting started.

A keyboard connected to an iPad will also give access to learning Apps (subscriptions required for the best ones) Flowkey, Skroove, Playground Sessions to name but three.
