Hello All
I know very little of digital music as the following questions shall reveal .
We wish to buy a keyboard with the below features,
Speakers for tuning and practice .
MIDI out for connection to computer and software .
A MIDI on and off switch ? here lies my confusion, can a keyboard which no doubt has a sound controler/card
be switched to MIDI mode to comunicate with computer / software as we have been advised to buy
Sibelius for school and music compatability.
We don't need a fully featured synth type keyboard at present
Can a keyboard become a MIDI contrller when speakers aren't required
so we don't have to be connected to the PC all the time .

Thanks MT

  • Most keyboards come with a USB conneciton these days rather than a MIDI IN/OUT.
  • MIDI is generally "ON" all the time - you can't "hear it" - it is simply trasmitting data over the MIDI channel (doesn't affect what you hear from the keyboard)
  • You want the keyboard to BE a MIDI controller, IF you don't want to use the built int sounds of the keyboard.
  • Price range? Do you want an "arranger" or a straight "digital piano" type? Basically the arranger is an "all in one" instrument that lets you use it as a "piano" type instrument, but can also play backing etc. Please see below for a sound demo from my Casio CTK7000
