If I know I'm going to be playing it again in a few hours, is it better to leave the synth on, or turn it off? How many hours is it OK to leave it on?

I turn my studio on when I'm starting my day and leave it running all day long in anticipation of inspiration jumping out of the weeds. Summertime I leave it running. with AC going. These things tend to be pretty efficient with power and don't generate too much heat.

Incidentally, if you are using any modern Analog gear you may notice differences in performance as the unit gradually warms up to operating temperature. This applies to drum machines, preamps, synths and tube amps as each case applies.

Some modern keyboards have an automatic time-off feature if not played for a pre-set time (2 hours for the Pa1000). Korg has this as the default setting but it can be deselected if desired.

Like Happyrat1, unless I am going out, my studio is activated first thing in the morning in the morning and turned off last thing at night - I will often stop what I am doing and dash to the studio and catch a riff on keys or strings, or divert for the day into a new project..

I don't use my home Yamaha keyboard every day, so I turn it off when finished. Ditto for my church's Nautilus AT. After the Service or practice sessions, it gets turned off.
