Hey all,

I've got lotsa gear (FA06, Montage 8, VR 730, Juno DS 88), [sigh], but I can't seem to get that fat synth sound on the triplet solo in Lido Shuffle. Should I look into one of these vendors selling Yamaha patches or just suck it up and use a 'close-enough' SAW Patch and run with it.

My wife says the audience won't notice but EVERYBODY knows that synth solo with the G D Bb F +sus4 triplets. Am I being too much of a purist? Has anybody had luck in using a specific patch from Roland or Yamaha?

Thanks in Advance,
Cliff

Sounds like horns thru a chorus effect. Maybe layered with a detuned sawtooth or two.

I'd say start fiddling around with a trumpet voice and add a little crunchiness with the FX.

Maybe trumpets layered with a suitable pad patch.

I found this video doing a random search.
Is this the part?
I will see if I can get s close match from my selection of synth voices on my Yammy.

I think Gary gave you the best approach -- and if you watch 3 versions of the song on youtube, whether live or studio, you'll hear 3 different tones.

1) your wife's correct. The crowd doesnt know and doesnt care.

2) we play Lido almost every gig. I use a patch on my kurz called "big old jupiter". I think it is a sawtooth wave sample although i'd have to double check that.

Thanks Dave. I showed my wife your response and now I have to take her out to dinner. 😳 😀. My wife is a retired band director and was actually on Jeopardy on TV. (1994). I need to remember that she’s never wrong. EVER. Maybe I’ll take her to a place with a drive-through as I like to live dangerously.

Take her out to see our band Sunday. We are playing at bellevue state park, 3500 people expected. We'll pay Lido for you ....

Think of the year that the song came out. Most likely it was an analog synth. And just about everybody used detuned sawtooths. Make sure you have a little bit of portamento on a monophonic patch.

Another thing to take into consideration is the fact that after the first time through all subsequent triplet patterns are playing harmonies and I think they just keep stacking them on top of each other. That's a studio trick that might be hard to duplicate live.

Your wife is correct. The audience doesn't know and won't care. And believe me, I *live* for the spot-on covers (but I also enjoy the ones that completely flip the vibe of the song around).

Having said that, I just looked, and if you have a PSRsx900/sx920/sx720/A5000/Genos/Genos2 (I'm sure there's an equivalent sound on Montage...) called 80sPitchySaw, that when you turn "standard Duet 2 Harmony" on, while holding a chord on the left hand, the right hand ends up sounding pretty much exactly like that.... and I'd be willing to bet one of your Rolands would have an even closer match.... but not sure how you'd get the exact harmony behaviour on either synth.

You'll also need to set the voice to poly instead of monophonic.

Why does have to be exactly the same as Boz?
Make yours your own style.
Be an individual.
Your wife knows best. :)
Agree completely. This is the problem with recorded music. That was one moment in time in the recording studio. The Recording industry is sucking the creativity out of musicians. Don't try to be somebody else. Come up with something new and refreshing. Here is a quote by one of the guys who started it all. It's one of my favorite quotes and I try to live by it.
"To me the synthesizer was always a source of new sounds that musicians could use to expand the range of possibilities for making music."
Robert Moog
