Hello everyone. I'm a new member of the forum. I'm a musician and I teach piano at the music high school in my hometown, Padua. I work a lot with orchestral libraries like the Hollywood Orchestra and especially the Vienna Symphonic Library.
I've had an Arturia Keylab Essential 61 keyboard since February. Unfortunately, I'm not happy with it because the touch response is truly disappointing and problematic with these orchestral libraries. To achieve a forte, I have to press hard, and if I reduce the pressure even slightly, the sound becomes very weak. I've tried changing the keyboard's response curve and adjusting some dynamic range and sensitivity parameters in the virtual instruments, but the situation doesn't improve much.

So I'm thinking of buying another keyboard. I've had the opportunity to try an M-Audio Hammer 88, and it works wonderfully with the piano, but unfortunately I haven't been able to try it with orchestral sounds. I'm very satisfied with the touch response.

And along with that, I was able to try a Studiologic SL73 Studio with a Fatar TP 100 keybed. I'm a little more satisfied with its touch feel and keybed than with the M-Audio, and the touch response is excellent on piano. It was connected to a Korg keyboard. But when we selected the Korg violin sound, I was disappointed. There was no smoothness in the velocity changes. It took very little to go from a velocity like 40 to one like 90. No smooth transition. But I thought it had something to do with the Korg keyboard. We also tried to change the response curve of the SL73 but couldn't find a way to do it.

So I'm asking for some advice and information. Do you think I'd be comfortable buying one of these two keyboards? A friend of mine who works with the Vienna Symphonic uses the Hammer 88 and has no problems.

However, I like the SL73 a little better, and it's also the perfect size, while the Hammer 88 is much larger and I can't seem to organize the space.

The information I'm looking for is this: I'd clearly get the SL73 MK2, which has a TP 110 instead of a TP 100. Is there a significant difference between the two? What exactly are the differences? Thank you in advance for any advice you can give me.

Many thanks.

TP/110 is to me (and many others) superior to the TP/100.

The other advantage of the SL73 Mk2 is the built in USB audio interface (meaning that with one USB cable you can send midi to your laptop (or iPad) and receive back digital audio which is then routed to the 1/4" outputs on the SL73 Mk2.

Thanks ☺️ what is the utility of that?

Try.

It works for me
So, do you think SL73 mk2 is better than Hammer 88 Pro? And just in case, i will need a small daw controller. Studiologic Mixface or Korg Nanokontrol Studio?

The utility of the built-in USB audio interface is that you don't need an external USB audio interface, and get better audio and lower latency vs. using the laptop/PC's onboard sound.

Of course if you already have an audio interface then the one built in to the SL73 Mk2 is of less utility. But if you are playing live it's one less thing to bring to the gig (just plug the SL73 Mk2 into your amp or PA).

One advantage of the M-audio may be the traditional pitch bend and mod wheels if you are used to those (Studiologic uses joysticks).

Also with 88 keys you have more "spare" keys for use as key switches (e.g. to change articulation, e.g. to pizzicato etc), assuming your software supports that. But 73 keys may be enough. Others will know more about this than me. I only know that this exists (I don't use it).

Is portability important? 88 keys are just more of a hassle to haul around.

Thanks for detailed explanation. (Sorry for my terrible english, i'm italian 😁).
So....portability is not important, i work esclusively at home, but space it's a little problem, so i have to evaluate how to organize.
And so it goes that i don't use live on stage. I need faders for control CCs, because using very large orchestral libraries it's necessary.
I wotk in Cubase Pro that allows the external mapping of a daw controller (be separate from the keyboard, be integrate in it). I just do it with my actual Arturia keylab essential 61 (but i'm not satisfied of the touch response because it's very awful).
If i'll be able to organize the spiace in my desk, Hammer 88 Pro is good for me. Otherwise i have to consider the SL73.
There's pro and versus.
Smaller space, touch feeling/touch response and keybed are the pros of Studiologic, 88 keys and faders/knobs are the pros of Hammer 88 Pro.
It's not easy to decide.

Either way your are getting an Italian keybed! (M-audio = Medeli; Studiologic = Fatar). But I think the entire is SL73 is made in Italy (at least true of the Studiologic Numa XPiano73 which is very similar to the SL73 Mk2 but has internal sounds).

Just reading the documentation, the SL73 Mk2 has 4 knobs that can be assigned to any midi CC. The pedal inputs (of which there are 3) can also be assigned to any midi CC. And then the joysticks can be assigned to midi CC. So that's a fair number of controllers to work with.

I don't use a DAW but it also says that the zone select buttons can be used as transport controls.

The SL73 mk2 also has channel aftertouch which might be useful for strings.

In bocca al lupo!

Thank you all for the precious advices and explanations.
I understood that in every case the decision will be good, Hammer 88 Pro or Studiologic SL73 are both right for me. I have only to decide.

☺️☺️☺️🙏🙏🙏
