It sounds like a flaky output circuit. Either a transistor has started to fail or one of its ancillary components such as a capacitor.
It's not a scratchy pot so it's not a simple DIY fix.
Take it in for service and a properly equipped tech can repair it for for anywhere between $100 and $200 USD.
