I have noticed oftentimes I will go into a sound and when I go into the elements I will solo each one to hear the sound but not all of them with a green light when played make a sound, I have gone through the different tabs on the left ( Osc/Tune, Pitch GS, Filter, Amplitude, Element LFO) and see no effective difference to make them silent. I only see one is a different preset number at top of Osc/Tune tab. I can't figure out why some elements are muted and making no sounds on solo setting.
In these diagrams , element 2 makes a sound when solo, but element 1 does not, why doesn't element 1 make a sound?

Check the individual volume levels settings for each layer in the setup.

I assume there's some sort of mixer and FX panel for the elements?

Check the Element EQ and Amplitude settings.

i'm not talking about the performance parts. I'm talking about the elements within each performance sound.
Select a performance then hit "edit" on the performance and it shows the screen above as I indicated.

Amplitude is marked on the left side, smack dead centre.

That is pretty self-explanatory. I'd say.

EQ settings also have loads of effect on a sound wave.

Change a few of those settings and the missing harmonics should be blasting you.

Excuse my lack of savvy regarding Yamaha keyboards.

I'm used to keyboards with logical controls... :p

I can tell you don't own one. As for logic, there is none in any of them , they are only as designed the way someone else imagined things to be.

One final brain fart.

Any chance the individual layers/voices/elements/whatever are simply not assigned in that setup/scene/preset/whatever?

How can you tell if it's an empty slot?

BTW... The recent inrush of Yamaha people, to me, is akin to a satanist coven crashing a church picnic these days... :)

No offense. To me Yamaha has always held a warm spot in Hell. :D. :D. :D

Burn me once. :p

On Topic: Well happyrat you were right, i double checked the amplitude setting and found it was '0' on that one element , don't know how i missed that.
Semi On Topic: I will say I am really impressed with the MODX, sounds and flexibility to accomplish a lot of things. Its not always easy to get a sound but I have had good results with the sounds I have gotten trying to cover other songs. The Scenes feature is really nice. Just wish the 76 key had more weight on the keys.
Off Topic: Yamaha = hell? What's next Hitler supported Yamaha? I got mine cheap in the aftermath of the initial release which is how I get all of my keyboards but I am an equal opportunity brand fan, I have big respect for Roland and Korg too.

My beef with Yamaha is that they refuse to adhere to the USB/MIDI class comparability standard. For decades I worked with a Linux platform and Yamaha basically told me to pound sand when it came to Linux drivers.

Nowadays Yamaha is the antichrist when it comes to my music. :p

Glad you found that amplitude setting ;)

Not sure what you mean by that, I use my MODX as a controller for a Roland DS and a Roland VK-8M. It sends patch changes and midi keys to both perfectly.
I do notice I have to use separate USBs for backups on MODX and Roland DS because they are not the same format.

This beef dates back over a decade now. The old PSRs were definitely NOT class compliant and I own a Yamaha usb mixer with no way to adjust the soundcard levels on a linux box.

Yamaha has always gone out of their way to ignore open source and their CSRs are downright rude about it.

They've lost a customer for life.

Gary, your experience with Yamaha relates to add ons and plug ins etc..
Your expectations from Yamaha are somewhat advanced since you run a complex home studio with lines in and out everywhere . . phew!
Your grudge is probably warranted and I applaud you for making it known and warning others with similar set ups.
However, Yamaha have world class products.
As a stand alone keyboard with maybe added external speakers and/or sustain pedals and/or usb ports etc. . and not much else, they can be adequate for many players and produce a high quality sound. No doubt!
Horses for courses I'd say.
My situation is simple and what I do with my humble psr s650 is amazing. My sound output is superb. I personally cannot criticise Yamaha.
Very happy in fact and such that I am looking at updating to the SX series in the very near future.
Cheers

its my opinion that the piano on Yamaha modx/montage is better than Roland or Kurzweil

Not every keyboard player thinks he's Van Clyburn or even plays piano.

The only thing a Bosendorfer and my Studiologic Sledge have in common is a similar pattern of keys...

EDIT: I dropped by a local music shop tonight to test drive a Fantom 08.

Verdict?

Disappointing...

Plasticky keys, plasticky shell, convoluted controls. (It looks like the bridge of the Enterprise with about equal functionality)

A few juicy sounds could be coaxed out of it. But the bread and butter sounds were pretty ho hum.

Not set up to test vocoder or line input.

They went to town on the sequencer/sampler/looper/arpeggiators and arranger features. I'd have to spend a week with the manual to figure those out.

For the $2899 CDN they were asking I'd rather buy a Nautilus. :p
