after nearly 10 weeks of buying- ----being disappointed --sending back (only to have it lost) a Roland Vr09------I have a new keyboard. Its the Yamaha ck61. It's really good---logical to operate---does what it says on the tin----RELIABLE ----no surprising sounds ---all stored elements come back correctly. The key action is obviously not piano quality, but neither is it plastic organ----its actually 'comfortable' to use . Maybe keys still on the small side (Vr-09 was ridiculous) but OK. The only issue I have IS -----the outputs are NOT 'Line level'-----they are 'instrument level'------I measured them at around 120Mv, stereo----140Mv mono. We have a rather basic setup (for small venue) where all the instruments go directly into the mixer -----not ideal but it suits our purpose. There is nothing on the market that matches 'instr' to Line. So the mixer has to take the strain, with its trims rather closer to the stops than one would like. Anyway I got suspicious when I had to turn my master volume almost to the stops. ----so measured it. Funnily enough there are now some 4 channel mixers which do exactly that----i bought one (£30) ---and it works as advertised which rather surprised me ----but i have measured its outputs and it delivers true 'Line level'. Also it mixes stereo output to true mono (proper summing, not just passive connections). It also mixes stereo/ stereo out. Previously I had to build a small amp/DI box to get my sons guitar to match the mixer correctly, so finding one already built has been good. So happy camper , at last. I can , now from experience, recommend the ck61!!. tara!

I recently got a CK 61 as well, an amazing keyboard - I actually downgraded from a YC 61 for financial reasons, and I like some of the CK sounds more. The organ is great if you keep the Leslie moving.

Shortly after getting it I noticed it wasn't loud enough at rehearsal with the volume slider dimed. I found this video on how to increase the output gain.

The trick with instrument level outputs is to connect them to a DI to convert them to mic level. This has the added benefit of being a balanced line that eliminates any noise on its way back to front of house. This removes the need to crank up the gain at the mixer, which will also be pulling up any noise. I have a couple of Behringer D120 Ultra-DI boxes (on Amazon between £20-25) that gives you 2 channels, and can handle both line level and instrument level, and has a ground lift (that has saved me a couple of times).

yes, I got a passive one for original keyboard (technics) ---but it was still low on the Yamaha--I guess this video explains why. My thanks to 'seratone' for this effort , much obliged. My son bought a passive DI for his guitar---but it did not really do the job, ------so I built an active one with a set gain (2.8) , no adjustment to mess with, and although I built in an earth and earth lift circuit ----did not fit the switch ---once again KISS. I was thinking that I would have to do this again but this video has saved the day!. |We do have ONE stereo input so I have been assigned this-----I guess that it was designed specifically for keyboards.-----so won't be needing the stereo mixer.------Music and electronics-----a learning curve for sure. ----I will check out on the Behringer though, thanks for that. -----two of us have Behringer headphone amps---OK they were cheap---but they fade over the course of the session and need adjustment from around half right to three quarters----so design is suspect, but Behringer seems very commonly used so I guess can't be that bad.;----- Thanks for your interest DynSiwmper, ----sharing expertise always appreciated.
