Hey friendly people!

I've had a Yamaha PSR-282 for a long time. I just got FL studio 10, and am trying to link the two. I can't get it to work.

The setup: (Preface: I normally do this with the keyboard plugged in at bootup, and I've tried many possible sequences of these events, but this one demonstrates the computer's response to the keyboard the best)
1) Load FL 10

2) turn keyboard on, plug in the cables
2 midi heads ------> USB port on my windows 7 laptop (all bundled in 1 cable)
Lined up the output and input ports, plugged that in.

Windows does not make a "new hardware" sound.

3)open midi settings in FL 10.
Output:
Microsoft Midi Mapper
Microsoft GS Wavetable synth

Input:
nothing

click "Rescan"

"VIEWCON.." appears in both output and input
output: VIEWCON.. MIDI hardware port
I set controller type to "generic controller", and enable it.

Close the box, bang on the piano keys, and there's no response. I hear the main box is supposed to blink or do something in FL Studio.

Anything I'm doing wrong? Do I need special drivers or something?
Thanks a lot. I'm a complete novice at this.

More random info:
info on my keyboard model: http://usa.yamaha.com/products/musi...yboards/portable_keyboards/psr282/?mode=model
the manual for my keyboard is here, though I didn't find it helpful for this problem: http://www.retrevo.com/support/Yamaha-PSR-282-Music-Keyboards-manual/id/961bh147/t/2/

EDIT:
Okay I discovered several problems.
1) yes I need YAMAHA drivers
2) My midi cable itself needed drivers, here:

It's a crappy cable I bought off Ebay, but it apparently does the job when you get the drivers handled.
