Hi
I don't yet own a keyboard , I have a 20yr old organ
I started with 2 yrs tuition and reached book 7 from the complete player by Kenneth Baker
but due to work commitments I have not played much over the last 5yrs
however I am 60 and due to retire in a couple of years so I am trying to re kindle my interest
I have been looking at a Tyros 5 and amazed at how things have moved on especially when so many song registrations are pre set - I seem to be spending hrs just trying to get the registrations to sound right

there is very little music for organs compared to keyboards so I am thinking of moving over

my only problem is reading keyboard music [ organ music is written on 2 staves so as well as the name of the cord there is always the notes to read for the left hand ]
but with keyboards one needs to remember the cord from the name
I just feel at 60 this may be too much to start again
is there any easy way to learn these

I'm also pushing 60 and still learning music theory.

Here's some excellent books for self learning.

http://www.amazon.com/Everything-Piano-Book-CD-classical/dp/1598699768

These four books will teach you everything you need to know about sight reading and music theory and chord construction and bring you up to speed.

Honestly there are no real shortcuts to mastering a keyboard. It's practice practice practice and study study study...

Music is great at any age... If you haven't got a keyboard yet, I recommend the Rolland VR 09. It simulates a leslie speaker and has exelent organ sounds built in. You can also play piano sounds on it, electric piano, and synthesizers as well as organ of course. If you think reading music is a daunting task, just start with learning some Improvisation. I'm still learning to play, but once you know the blues scale and minor scale, ect. You can just make stuff up within the scale. If you find a riff you like, you can just write it down—or remember it—and play it sometime later. Eventually you can put all these riffs together and you have yourself a blues song. Or maby a minor waltz? It's all up to you. But reading music is always helpful, and I recommend you persist with it.
