Hi, I actually found a fix!
Steinberg makes a VST called Halion Sonic SE, it's free. But by itself, it has no sounds. But if you also install their free notation program Dorico SE, you get the sounds, which includes a general midi set. The stand alone halion sonic application has its own ability to open and play midi files and it sounds pretty good! So far, this appears to be the best sounding software replacement I've found.

My mistake.

This is the MIDI player I was referring to.

Apparently it can also work with VSTs, Soundfonts, or MIDI devices.

Also runs under wine in Linux.

I went to the page for that player: https://psrtutorial.com/MB/midiplayer.html
didn't see anything about VST support? It appears the last update for this player was in 2014 according to info on the site. Where did you see VST support?

Here's a couple of screenshots for the MIDI Player I use. In the Settings page you can see it mentions VSTi in the top left corner.
