Randomly sounding notes- where is the problem?

Hi I’m hearing unwanted randomly sounding notes that haven’t been played.

Here’s my set up:

Roland FP4 - 5pin midi- Scarlett 6i6
MacBook m2 8GB - satechi usb hub - 6i6
MacBook - satechi usb hub - korg nanocontrol

Running MainStage with an addictive keys vst. No other plug ins.

Notes are loud and sustained. Don’t stop until I hit a reset/panic button in MainStage which is very disruptive.

Where’s the most likely source of the problem?! Where should I start?

Any help very gratefully received!!! Thanks!!

Is this while you're playing manually, or while using a MIDI song file, or while using an auto-accompaniment, etc.?

Hmmmm interesting. Looks like I've got some more reading to do... I had assumed it was a hardware problem with a faulty socket/cable or usb hub.

(yes it's happening when playing live)

It could be hardware related, but examining the output that's going from the keyboard/controller to the MacBook using a MIDI monitor may help you track down where it's coming from, then you'll be in a better position to come up with a solution.

I'm pretty sure all he has to do is turn LOCAL OFF on the keys and he should be good to go.

This is intriguing. Please can you explain what you think is happening? Then presumably I need to check the Roland manual to work out how to change this setting.

OK, I'm not going to spoon feed anyone about how MIDI feedback loops work. Just google it and RTFM for how to toggle LOCAL ON/OFF.

Local On/Off just controls whether the keyboard produces its own sounds when you play it, not whether it transmits MIDI.

If he were getting duplicate notes all the time-- the keyboard's sounds plus identical notes playing in some external sound module-- that would be a Local On/Off issue.

But he hasn't indicated that he's getting duplicate notes all the time, just random notes out of the blue which need to be terminated using reset/panic.

I think he should try turning Local Off and report back just to satisfy you, but I don't see how Local Control could either cause or prevent MIDI feedback; that would be more of a MIDI routing issue.

Try using USB MIDI from the Roland instead. Try setting up a midi monitor in mainstage.

Im sorry if its illegal to add to another post but Im having very a similar problem!
Im using a Midiplus Xpro88 via usb cable to a Lenovo laptop and a Focusrite 4i4 interface.
A couple months ago It started to randomly repeat some notes I play. The note (usually just one) gets repeated LOUD and I think its usually when I release the key. The strange thing is Ive been using this setup for years and it only does this since a couple of months ago.

I would connect your midiplus xpro88 directly to your laptop through usb then install (if you don't already have) a midi monitor program. Open the program and see what is happening with the midi data coming in. I'm assuming you are on a PC using Windows.

If you see random data coming in without you doing nothing most probably your controller is at fault.

I had an old M-Audio Oxygen a decade ago, that choked on too much MIDI data coming in from velocity sensitivity. It would respond erratically with ghost notes, missed notes and notes that wouldn't turn off when released. The solution was to disable velocity at first and eventually to sell off that piece of crap for something else.

In your case it might be aftertouch or velocity or pitch bend or anything that's trying to stream MIDI data alongside note data with an underpowered CPU.

Try disabling them one at a time.

Also take a look if anything has changed in your laptop's configuration. Any new TSR programs? Drivers? Etc. Update as necessary.
